residents. Officials later confirmed that three distinct tsunami waves struck the area,
with the third being the most destructive. Elsewhere, in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky—the
regional capital—the tremors reached 7–8 points on the local intensity
scale, shaking buildings violently. A wall collapsed at Kindergarten No. 15, though
luckily the building was empty at the time. Minor injuries were reported as
panicked residents fled their homes, including at the busy Elizovo Airport where a
woman was hurt during the evacuation. Governor Vladimir Solodov described the earthquake
as “the strongest in over a decade,” warning that aftershocks as large as
magnitude 7.5 could continue for weeks. Tsunami waves as high as four meters
battered parts of Kamchatka’s coastline, destroying port facilities, fishing vessels,
and seaside infrastructure. In other areas, smaller waves between 15 and 60 centimeters
reached towns such as Ust-Kamchatsky and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Russia’s Emergency
Situations Ministry quickly ordered evacuations of low-lying coastal communities, while emergency
teams began inspecting schools, hospitals, and residential buildings for structural damage.
Across the Pacific, Hawaii was placed on high alert after the Pacific Tsunami Warning
Center estimated incoming waves of one to three meters above tide level.
Sirens blared throughout the islands, prompting thousands to rush to higher
ground and upper floors of buildings. Traffic snarled highways as residents scrambled to
evacuate, with Governor Josh Green urging people to stay off beaches and remain vigilant.
Similar warnings were issued for Alaska, California, and Oregon, though initial
wave activity was less severe than feared. Seismologists are now warning of an extended
period of seismic unrest in the region. More than 50 aftershocks have already been recorded,
and experts say that earthquakes up to magnitude 7.5 could strike over the next month. “This
is a textbook subduction-zone earthquake,” one Russian geophysicist explained. “The rupture
extended nearly 200 kilometers along the trench, which makes the possibility of
large aftershocks very high.” The 8.8-magnitude earthquake and ensuing
