You’ve probably heard about the FLiRT COVID variants by now, but do you know how they got their nickname?
Well, unfortunately, there is nothing romantic about it. The term FLiRT was first coined by a professor of evolutionary biology, Ryan Gregory. He’s also the guide behind other popular variant monikers such as Omicron.
FLiRDTis derived from the letters in the names of the variants’ mutations, F456L and R346T.
Variants has been seen in Singapore, US and India but there is no indicaiton yet that these variants are more transmissable or cause more severe disease than other circulating varinats.
