日本ポップス界のレジェンドともいえる女性シンガーソングライター同士の豪華ユニット結成は奇跡とも言えるが、
実は竹内まりやと杏里は1978年デビューの同期であり、兼ねてより、2人で何か面白いことをやりたいと話し合っていた。尚、ユニット名Peach＆Apricotの”Peach“は竹内まりやの代表曲「不思議なピーチパイ」から、 “Apricot“は杏里のファースト・アルバムのタイトル「Apricot Jam」からとられている。
今回の楽曲「Watching Over You」は作詞を竹内まりやが担当、作曲と編曲は作曲家の林哲司が手掛けている。
林哲司と言えば、竹内まりや「SEPTEMBER」、上田正樹「悲しい色やね」、杏里「悲しみがとまらない」、杉山清貴＆オメガトライブ「ふたりの夏物語」など80年代の音楽シーンに数々のヒット曲を送り込んだ、言わずと知れた日本を代表するレジェンドだが、近年はジャパニーズ・シティ・ポップのリバイバル・ブームで大ヒット中の、松原みき「真夜中のドア～Stay With Me」の作曲家としても有名である。尚、林哲司と杏里のタッグは「YOU ARE NOT ALONE」以来38年ぶり、竹内まりやとは「イチゴの誘惑」以来、実に40年ぶりとなる。
ジャパニーズ・シティ・ポップ・ブームが全世界的に勢いを増す中、
シーンを象徴、牽引する「プラスティック・ラブ」の竹内まりや、そして「真夜中のドア～Stay With Me」の林哲司、

Japanese singer-songwriters Takeuchi Mariya and Anri forms new super duo Peach&Apricot,
and releases their first ever collaborative single 「Watching Over You」.
The coming together of two legends, both spectacular female singer-songwriters in the Japanese pop industry may seem like a miracle, but little do people know, they are friends who both debuted in 1978 and have been talking about doing something fun together for some time. As for the origins of their new name, the “Peach” from Peach&Apricot comes from one of Takeuchi Mariya’s most popular hit 「Fushigi na Peach Pie」, while the “Apricot” comes from Anri’s debut album title 「Apricot Jam」.
The lyrics to the new track 「Watching Over You」 is written by Takeuchi Mariya, and the music is composed and arranged by Hayashi Tetsushi. Another living legend in the Japanese music industry, you may recognize some of his work including Takeuchi Mariya’s 「SEPTEMBER」, Ueda Masaki’s 「Kanashii iroyane」,Anri’s 「I Can’t Stop The Loneliness」, and Kiyotaka Sugiyama & Omega Tribe’s 「Futari no Natsu Monogatari」, all massive hits that defined the music of the 80s. And most recently, he has been recently renowned for being the composer of Miki Matsubara’s 「Mayonaka no Doa ~Stay With Me」, which is once again racing up the charts due to the revival boom of Japanese city pop music.
This marks the first time in 38 years since 「YOU ARE NOT ALONE」 that Hayashi Tetsuji and Anri teams up for a single, and the first time in 40 years since 「Strawberry Temptation」 that he collaborates with Takeuchi Mariya.
As the massive wave of Japanese city pop breaks international grounds and continues to reach new global audience, symbolizing and leading the scene is 「Plastic Love」 artist Takeuchi Mariya, 「Mayonaka no Doa ~Stay With Me」 composer Hayashi Tetsuji, and Anri, who’ve released hit singles 「Cat’s Eye」 and 「I Can’t Stop The Loneliness」 and with the recent re-evaluation of 「Remember Summer Days」 has become an essential part of the city-pop scene.
