SOT, Seiko Hashimoto, President of the Tokyo 2020 organising committee (Japanese): “It has been one year since the games were postponed for the first time ever in history due to COVID-19, and for everyone to face unprecedented challenges. Athletes who were aiming for the Tokyo 2020 back then, must have been put in a difficult situation where they could not participate in the games nor engage in training. I believe you must have gone through tremendous struggles to overcome this past one year. However, in 50 days counting, we can welcome you all to this stage and we are at the point of opening and hosting the games.”
