On Wings of Song (Auf Flügeln des Gesanges)- Mendelssohn/ arr. Heifetz (Violin & Piano) ｜Eimi Wakui
Auf Flügeln des Gesanges (“On Wings of Song”) is the second piece from Felix Mendelssohn’s Six Songs, Op. 34, composed in 1834. Based on a poem by Heinrich Heine, it is a work filled with dreamlike lyricism and tender love.
Mendelssohn (1809–1847), a leading composer of the German Romantic era, is known for his clarity, balance, and refined emotional expression. In this song, he sets Heine’s imagery— “riding on the wings of song to a distant land of love and beauty”—to a gentle 6/8 rhythm and a pure, flowing melody, creating a sense of dreamlike flight and tranquil happiness.
In this performance, I play the piece using the arrangement for violin and piano by the legendary violinist Jascha Heifetz (1901–1987). Heifetz’s transcription preserves the original vocal beauty while fully exploiting the violin’s expressive possibilities. Double stops, delicate high-register phrasing, and shimmering tone colors enrich the violin’s sound, giving the piece added depth and warmth.
In this rendition, I aimed to let the violin truly “sing,” while highlighting the pianist’s flowing lines and the natural dialogue between our instruments.The piano’s gentle touch becomes the wings upon which the violin soars, as the two instruments together tell a single poetic story.
