I am honored to extend my greetings as we gather to celebrate the opening of the historic Tokyo 2025 Dev Olympics. [Applause] to ICSD President Kosa, to all deaf athletes who have traveled from around the world, to our distinguished guests, and to everyone watching this opening ceremony across the globe. Welcome to Japan and welcome to Tokyo. We extend our warmest greetings to you all. This is the first ever summer deaf Olympics to be held in Japan. We are truly delighted to share with you the joy of hosting this milestone event in Tokyo, marking the 100th anniversary since the first deaf Olympics were held in Paris in 1924. We extend our deepest gratitude to the ICSD, the government of Japan, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, and all those who have supported us and worked hand in hand to make the Deaf Olympics a reality. The deaf Olympics began as a movement to promote understanding of deafness and sign language and to enhance the social status of deaf people. Upholding the philosophy of equality through sport. We have used the Tokyo 2025 Deaf Olympics as an opportunity to advance understanding of deafness, sign language, deaf sports, and barrierfree communication throughout Japan. Japan has enacted the act for eliminating discrimination against persons with disabilities. The act on promotion of measures concerning information accessibility and communication for persons with disabilities and the act on promotion of measures concerning sign language. Thus the society surrounding us to all deaf athletes. Welcome to this grand stage. We open our hearts to you all. People around the world and here in Japan. Today deaf athletes have gathered from across the globe. The site of deaf athletes connecting hearts through fully utilizing international sign, body language, and facial expressions. Acknowledging and respecting each other as they compete is the very embodiment of an inclusive society. This is the true power of deaf sports. And here the significance of the deaf Olympics shines at its brightest. As hosts, we will do our utmost to support this stage until the very end, ensuring that this first ever deaf Olympics in Japan becomes a deeply memorable and inspiring event for all deaf athletes and supporters. [Applause] Dear Royal Highness Crown and Crown Princess Akishino and Princess Kako, and Prince Hisito, Prime Minister Sai Takayichi, Governor Yudiko Kohik, OC Chairperson Mitsuji Hisamatsu and Daigo Ishibashi. Dear athletes, Perudos equalas. This Latin motto embodies the essence of the international committee of sports for the deaf and the deaf Olympics movement. Sport is the area that can promote inclusion, can promote understanding, and can promote equality among all people, regardless of whether one is hearing or deaf. After the Olympics, the deaf Olympics is the world’s second oldest international multisport event. We are proud that the best of the deaf sporting world have been able to participate in 24 summer deaf Olympics since 1924. Sport connects. Sport elevates. Sport proves that there is no difference between athletes. For here, knowledge, achievement, and willpower count. This year, 2025 is special for us in many ways. This year marks the conclusion of a year of jubilees in international deaf sports. ICSD celebrates the 100th anniversary of its foundation last year. ICSD, then known as CISS, was founded in Paris in 1924 by Eugene Ruben Al. In 2024, we organized an extremely successful winter deaf Olympics in Erzurum, Turkey, where a record number of athletes participated. There is no doubt that at the most significant summer sporting event of the deaf sports world, we are also breaking records. Never before have so many athletes registered for a summer deaf Olympics as now. Altogether 370 athletes. Along with this comes the boundless hospitality of the Japanese people and Tokyo. Thank you for your trust. Thank you for your hospitality. Thank you Japan. Dear athletes, the eyes of the world are on you. We are deaf. We face certain challenges, but we are also full members of society. Sport is one of the best means to show this. In the spirit of pure sport and fair play, we can prove it. I trust you all. Show what you are capable of. All that remains is for me to declare that the 25th Summer Deaf Olympics is ready to begin. I hereby open the 25th Summer Deaf Olympics. Long live deaf sport. [Applause] Next we will have the entrance of the deaf Olympics flag. [Music] Hallelujah. Hallelujah. We will now proceed with the deaf Olympic flag raising ceremony. Everyone please rise. If you have difficulty standing, please remain seated. [Music] Heat. Heat. Thank you. Please be seated. The first death Olympics were held in Paris in 1924. And in 2025, the games will celebrate their 100th anniversary right here in Tokyo. In the leadup to this memorable event, we’ve been sharing the spirit of the deaf Olympics and deaf culture, gathering messages of support for the athletes not only from Tokyo, but from all across Japan.
