🗓️10/6⚾ALDS G2⚾Mariners・Luis Castillo🆚Tigers・Tarik Skubal🏟️Comerica Park⚾ #LuisCastillo #TarikSkubal
It’s the Detroit Tigers taking on the Seattle Mariners. It’s buzzing in here ahead of game three. And we’ll be back in a minute to get it started. alongside my partner Chris Singleton. I’m John Shopppee. Thanks for joining us here postseason baseball. Singi, it’s always great to see and be a part of. Oh boo, you just never know what’s in store when it comes to postseason baseball. You do know you’re going to see some amazing pitching, guys coming out of the bullpin throwing 100, some incredible defensive plays, some big knocks, and maybe a mistake or two that live on forever. All I do know is I’m pumped up for this one. Wrapping up. The crowd is electric, and we’ll be back to get it going right after this. [Applause] just about ready to go. And on the mound today, Luis Castile. What should we keep an eye on here? Four pitch guy. He’s got some options to work with in terms of keeping hitters off balance. So, we’ll see how he decides to utilize those weapons through this start here and whether or not he’s able to mix the ball in early or if he wants to hold something back a little bit later, maybe second, third time through the order and give them something they haven’t seen. It’s tough when you know a guy’s got that in his back pocket. As a hitter, you really have to stay on your toes. Glabber Torres, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. That one catches the zone and the count is one and one. [Applause] Ball two. Two two. And there’s a ball. Well, he’s not afraid to fall into a two strike count. Knows the strike zone very well. So much so that I think umpires will look at him and determine whether it’s a ball or strike if he swings or not. That one off the bad part of the bat. Just a lazy fly ball. Makes a nice grab at a full sprint. One down. And now the Tigers line up for manager AJ Hinch. And with their ace on the mound today, they’re just looking to provide him a little bit of run support. They’ll see what they can do for him. You have to be really careful when you’ve got a guy like this on the mound for you to not become a spectator. You know that he doesn’t give up a whole lot, but sometimes guys get a little too comfortable and don’t have an urgency to score runs. You have to make sure you put him in a situation where he can get the W, but also you guys can cruise to the finish line and not have to worry about a comeback in the end. [Applause] And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. Swing and a miss. And it’s a full count now. Full count. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. One out. Base is empty. [Applause] Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. So, a man aboard now with one away. Here’s Riley Green. [Applause] And there’s the strike. Hit on the ground. Might be two. Over to Palumbo. They get one. Double play. What a twin killing to end the inning. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. So now the Mariners offense gets to go to work for the first time. We’ve got no score. Back here with my pal Singi and today’s starter, TK Scooble. How about a report on him, Chris? Anytime you have five pitches to work with on the mound, that repertoire can be a real weapon in terms of keeping hitters off balance. Man, it’s it’s one of those things that I’m going to be looking for in this one. Does he have a feel for all of those pitches or is he just able to get one or two over in the strike zone where he wants now? It’s tough to do to be able to command all those pitches, but if he can, he is going to be very tough for the opponent today. Randy Rosena, the lead off batter as he swings through it for strike one. [Applause] Foul ball still 0 and two [Applause] outside with a breaking ball. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. Hones. It’s a strike out. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strike out. [Applause] And stepping in for the Mariners, Cal Raleigh. Pop foul out of play off to the right. [Applause] One down. Base is empty. Look out. And it hit him. He had two strikes on him. And he hit him. And now it’s Julio Rodriguez. Third baseman playing on the edge of the grass looking for the sack bunt. swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field. Meadows makes the catch for the owl and there’s two away. Batting four the first base. And now we check out the Mariners lineup with an excellent arm on the mound. Singi, this won’t be easy. They’ll need to take advantage of the opportunities that they do have. You’re right about that, Boo. Odds are they won’t have many chances against this guy, but if they can rattle him out of the gates, they’ll have a shot. If not, look out. It might be a long day for this offense. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. Two gone, but the go-ahead run is at first here in game three of this American League Division series in the air out towards left center, makes the catch, and that’ll do it. One left for Seattle. We played an inning. Third game of the division series. And here is Spencer Torqulson. [Applause] Castillo back to work. That’s off the inside corner. One and0. This park is absolutely electric for this game. Such a great postseason atmosphere. Just missed. Nothing like the drama you get in the postseason. Boo. Love being a part of these games. And another ball. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] That one’s in there. Three and one. Take it all the way on three 0 right there. And as a hitter, you’re saying, “Why couldn’t I get that pitch earlier in the count when I’m looking to swing?” That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Now it’s going to be Colt Keith and a first pitch fast is in for a strike. [Applause] Swing and a ground ball. Base hit right field. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. And you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a whole runner in scoring position now. And a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. Dylan Dingler up now for the Tigers [Applause] at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. No ball. One strike. That one catches the corner for a strike. Don’t play situation here. He’s been working up in the zone. Typically, you look for guys to get that ground ball. See if he adjusts on this next pick. Inside. Just missed. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. And a swing to miss. Down on strikes. And that is a big first out. Definitely made him chase a little bit out of his own right there. I don’t think that’s a strike if he takes it. Pretty textbook pitching. Get ahead in the count. Get the guy in the box on his heels and then force him to chase your pitch where he doesn’t have much of a chance to do any damage. And now here is Zack McKinstre. He takes the strike. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Swing and a miss as he was out front that time. Kenny Jansen doing home plate duties in this one. Not a huge strike zone from Jansen, so he can’t really be called a pitcher umpire, but he does like the bottom part of the strike zone. We may see some pitchers steal a few strikes down there, especially the ones right below the knees. That’s if their catcher can present it properly. [Applause] And he couldn’t hold back. He’s run up on strikes. Bobby Bayz digs in right side. swings and misses. And one that crosses the plate and now they’re just one strike away from getting out of this mess. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open on the ground. Fires to first on the run and they get the out. So they strand a pair. We go to the bottom of inning number two. No score. Back at T-Mobile Park, the batter now, the second base, Oranco. [Applause] And there’s a strike. Good heater at 98. Nowadays, with advanced metrics and increased use of moving the infielders around, defense isn’t necessarily about making errors. Are you able to get to the ball? Are you able to position fielders where guys hit the ball, but within the new shift rules and delivers outside and an area that goes unnoticed is the coach that’s responsible for positioning and then uh the research person that’s providing the information. So what we’re seeing in baseball, so many more people behind the scenes that are contributing to the success between the lines. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Back when you played, it wasn’t the empirical data we have now. It was a guy with a ruler and a diamond taking a colored pencil and drawing a line where he thought someone had hit the ball. Right. Yes. That or just going off of gut or feel. What does it look like his swing is today? What’s the pitcher throwing? They are sticking to the metrics and what seems to be most consistent for that hitter regardless of who the pitcher is on the mound. Ku Heno Suarez stands in here. Tried to hold back his swing there but went around. Nobody out. Runner of first ball there. One ball, one tonight. Cut on and miss. Good change up right there. Now one and two. [Applause] Swings and misses. Struck him out. Usually when you see several pitches, you’re going to get at least one that you might be able to do something with, but they didn’t exactly challenge him in any way right there. And really, they just used his aggressiveness against him. I don’t think he even got a pitch in the zone. No, that’s a good point, Sigy. He goes down on strikes, but not a single pitch was actually in the strike zone. Now the left fielder, Dominic Panzone, that drops in for a strike. [Applause] man at first one away. Well, he’s gotten ahead with two pitches down in the zone. He has plenty of options right here. He can go up, he can go away, he can add velocity, he can subtract. Strike three and that’s two in a row. No, that was a pretty poor at bat. just had never got the battle off his shoulder. I mean, you got to go up there looking to swing at some point, especially once you’re down 02. And at that point, make an adjustment. Look to put the ball in play if it’s anywhere close. And I’m just not sure what the plan was there. And now it’s Victor Robless up to hit. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. [Applause] on the ground right side and that one finds its way through and now first and second with two outs. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. First and second, two outs. JP Crawford gets a chance to hit in the air. Left field down the line and that drops foul. Two on, two outs. Got the bat going too soon. It’s strike two. Nothing. Nothing here in the bottom of the second. Swing and a miss. And that is that a lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. [Applause] Onto the third inning. And stepping in is the speedy Parker Meadows. [Applause] Meadows hitting ninth in today’s lineup, and he was a second round pick back in 2018. That one misses and that’s ball one. [Applause] Late on that fast ball. Spin rates outstanding on that high fast ball. Really tough to hit. Next pitch misses way outside. Back up the middle in a base hit. Had a good start to the inning. Now Torres up to hit. Fly to right his first time. Inside just missed [Applause] that catches the outside corner and one and one. Runner at first with no outs here. Next pitch is outside. [Applause] That one in there across the letters. Two strike. Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. [Applause] And it remains two and two. [Applause] That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Swing and a ball lined out towards center. Snags it on the run and there’s one down. That was just a great jump and route to the ball. Well, it had to be. If he was going to cover all that ground and bring in that sinking liner, that’s the way it had to be done. Nice job. And next up for the Tigers, Carrie Carpenter. One for one with a single so far. Castillo will look to first. Meadows back on a dive. [Applause] There’s the strike. check swing and he went and the count is 0 and two. No ball. Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. Riley Green will hit next. 0 for one so far. [Applause] And the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, if he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way, he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch. Two gone, but the go-ahead run is at first here in game three of this American League Division Series. Fast on the inside corner for a strike. Pitch misses. Two balls, two strikes. [Applause] And down on strikes, make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. They get a leadoff single, but leave him stranded. We head now to the home half of inning number three. We’re tied nothing nothing. [Applause] And we’re back ready to go for the last half of the inning. And now the DH Randy Roserena Rosena [Applause] on the ground of first and that’s just foul. [Applause] Hard hit right side ran to Torlson. One up, one down. Now Patt catcher Cal. And up next for Seattle, Cal Raleigh. He is at the top of the game in terms of defense at the catching spot. First pitch misses. It’s so impressive because these guys have to do so much study and preparation for their pitchers, for opposing hitters, and really their number one job is to guide that staff through a ball game. And so when you also can turn it up offensively and be a force there, that is a win-win every manager’s dream. But 2-1, they got a foul ball and as well lots of pop in that bench. So you combine the slug with really good defense. The lefty fires. Next offering misses down and away. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another 3-2. Got him. Swing in [Applause] the center field. Here’s the center fielder, Julio Rodriguez. He’s all for Rodriguez. And the pitch a little bit low. Ball one [Applause] right side. tosses to first. Three up, three down. Inning over. Mariners go down quietly there. Still no score. [Applause] And welcome back to the ballpark. And here’s the first baseman, Spencer Torqulson. [Applause] That pitch in for a strike 0 and one 01 late with the swing there quickly in an 02 count. You got to figure out a way to shorten your path to the baseball. Put it in play somewhere. Then you got a chance. That one missed on the ground right side and foul ball. Fights that one away. Still one and two. [Applause] BS another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Well, that’s the money maker right there. Two strikes as lighter down and away from a same side thrower as the hitter. I mean, it’s just tough. You’re looking to protect with two strikes and very difficult to lay off. Here’s the second base, Colt. He swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow left field. Kenzone makes the catch. That’s out number two. Now battle Dylan. Dylan Dingler up now for the Tigers. He was a strikeout victim his first time. This guy one of the best defensive catchers going. You talk about framing, the ability to block, catch, and throw. He is at the top of the game at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Really good athlete. And many times we talk about, you know, the feet of infielders. This catcher as well, really quick feet. He’s able to recognize the pitch, see the trajectory, and get into a spot where he can block those balls and keep them from going to the back stop. Swing and a miss as he chases that one darting out of the zone. Gets it to first. And he has thrown four shut out innings. Onto the bottom of the fourth now, still with no score. [Applause] Bottom four to go. The first baseman. He’s got a nice short compact swing. Doesn’t swing and miss a whole lot. Strike one. Over 80% of his first pitches are strikes. You’re doing that could have a really good day out there on the mound. And it’s one and one. really impressive with the way he frames, the way that he sets it up, because sometimes those pitches are off the plate, but because he sets up and presents it so well, he steals strikes for his pitcher. And there’s a foul ball. And Chris, beyond the fact that he’s so incredible defensively, he also can swing the stick. Still two and two after the foul ball. line drive to short and caught. Nice swing and good solid contact. Needed a little more lift to get into the outfield gap. A little more back spin there. Now Jorge Palano walked his first time right through there for a strike. [Applause] And that finds the mark on the outside corner and it’s 0 and two. [Applause] Good job to fight that one off. Base is empty. One away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. line and a base hit into right. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. Really stayed inside that baseball to send it to the opposite field with the shift on to the pole side. That’s an easy knock if he’ll take it. One gone runner at first. AU Heno Suarez up next for the Mariners. 10 squirts away a little bit. [Applause] [Applause] Swing and a miss and a count even at one. He doubled up on the off speed there. We talk about the power of fast ball, but he’s working a little differently here. Palanco on the go. Pitch misses inside. Throw to second. See, you know, nights like this when it seems harder to score, I like the call to put him in motion and try to steal the base. Ball’s not carrying. No home runs so far. So, trying to manufacture some offense like this may be the way to go. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. Wow, that’s 89 on the gun. And it’s a change up. It’s like good hitting if you’re looking for it, but because of the speed differential between the fast ball and that pitch, really hard for a hitter to get on time with it. goes down looking. Most guys are very aggressive when they see the stakes out there on the base paths and you can’t understand why he wasn’t ready to swing the bat. You’ve got to be ready to swing the bat in a situation like that with the go-ahead run in scoring position. [Applause] So the go-ahead run in scoring position. Now here is Dominic Panzone and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. [Applause] the healthy cut. Tough pitch at 98, but a really good pass at the ball and ball one. Tough to take a two strike change up that just missed. I think it froze him. Gets a piece and stays alive. He’s gone off speed. He needs to elevate here with two strikes out of the zone. Not close with that one. And that’s ball two. Got him. Make it seven strikeouts for Well, needed a big strike out to get out of danger. Turned in the deception of that change up. Great execution. Really sold it with the arm speed. Had his opponent way out on that front foot. [Applause] Third game of the division series. Now the third baseman, Zack McKinstry. Castillo back to work. That’s too low. And it’s one and0. Well, these Tigers showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. They haven’t produced a run yet, but the pitch count for the starter is starting to climb. So, they’re hoping that starts to pay off soon. And I think they’re in a good spot thanks to their pitching. But no one would be shocked if this offense strings something together to take the lead. [Applause] fouls it off. Still one and two. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. Off the mark there and it’s two and two. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. And now it’s rounded out. His first time up singing. You talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays. First offering and it just misses. And because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond. and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. [Applause] Jav Bayz, like fellow Puerto Rican Francisco Lindor, born in Puerto Rico, but was drafted in the first round out of high school in Florida. The shorts stop takes the ball. [Applause] Puts it in the air out towards left center. Kenzone sizing this one up. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s two away. The center fielder Parker Meadow digging in. It’s the speedy outfielder Parker Meadows. And he’s already singled in this game. in the air to left center. Rodriguez sizes this one up. He’s got it. And that is that. Halfway through this one, still no score. Back in Seattle. And now the right fielder, Victor Ro. Victor Rob left swing at a ball popped up Bayz and makes the grab and there’s one away. He’s been going after these guys consistently and as a result he’s been able to keep his pitch count low the ball very well right now. Next JP Crawford 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. Foul ball there. One down. Base is empty. Ground ball to the right side. Slides, but he can’t come up with it now. He’ll turn for second. The throw in. Not in time. He’s safe. These guys today are so great with handling velocity. They’re seeing high speeds day after day. And a nice job of turning that one around. So the lineup flips over now it’s the DH Randy or Rosarena check swing and he went at strike one [Applause] and fouled [Applause] One, two, and a swing in the miss. And he’s up to eight strikeouts in this one. Now batting catcher Cal Raleigh up next for the Mariners outfield playing very deep not wanting anything over their heads. Look out here. He’s going to come up ready to swing in this situation and strike one to the catcher. Good pitch right there. Anytime you can get one by a bat of this caliber, especially with runners on, it’s got to give you some confidence out there on the mound that you can win this battle. Runner at second, two down here in game three of this American League Division Series. Next offering way off the plate [Applause] and that’s too high. Really good take especially with two strikes. [Applause] missed with a change up counts full three and two. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. Crawford on it second with two down. [Music] fights it off. You’ll see another. Well, you can’t really adjust your game plan for that last pitch. Guy hasn’t thrown it very much. You got to focus on the stuff that he’s throwing up there most of the time. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Adam out front for the strike out. Mariners lead one and we are still scoreless. [Applause] [Applause] Back at T-Mobile Park, here comes Glaver Torres. [Applause] And a foul ball. That missed by a lot. And that is ball one. Yeah, that’s fouled off. and Glaver takes outside. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up. Two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. [Applause] So digging in Carrie Carpenter one for two. [Applause] That one hooked foul. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. All tied up and we’re the top half of the sixth. Out to center. Rodriguez settles under it. Puts it away for the two down. So up next, Riley Green 0 for two in this one. Green, 24 years old, a former first round pick back in 2019. That’s in there. It’s 0 and one. [Applause] And that one fouled off. Two out. Base is empty. Swing and a miss. And he’s down on strikes. And it’s a three up, three down inning. Make it six shut out innings for him out there now. And we still have no score. [Applause] And we’re back. John Shelby with Chris Singleton in the booth. And leading off the bottom of the six, Julio Rodriguez. [Applause] [Applause] And that’s in the dirt. Well, these Mariners doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats on them. They haven’t produced a run yet, but the pitch count for the starter is starting to climb. So, they’re hoping that starts to pay off soon. That one finds the zone. Now two and one. And I think they’re in a good spot thanks to their pitching. But no one would be shocked if this offense strings something together to take the lead. And a swing and a miss. Two ball. Two strike. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Pretty electric stuff showing up on the mound right now. I mean in the double digit strikeouts. He should be able to rack up some more before he’s done in this one. And not many of these hitters have had much of an answer for what he’s offering out there. Naylor the batter now as he swings and misses for strike one. It really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today. Good fast ball, excellent slider, but they’ve not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there. Outside low two and one. And strike two. [Applause] Make it four strikeouts in a row. just cruising along now. Batt Palano up next for the Mariners. Walk and he’s also singled. [Applause] Way outside and that’s ball one. Well, a mistake right here could untie this ball game. If you’re the pitcher out there, you just want to be a little more cautious. [Applause] And that one hit to first. tosses to the pitcher covering the bag and Palano is out and it’s a one two3 inning. Nobody left for Seattle and we’re still knotted at zero. [Applause] All set for the start of the inning. And now the first baseman, Spencer Torlson. He’s a big strong guy. Can untie this game with one swing. First offering misses badly for ball one. Notice how they’re swinging too early or too late. That’s a timing problem. They need to guess right on a few of those pitches. And I mean make an educated guess. Next pitch is outside. Check swing called strike that misses the zone and it’s a full count. It’s a lead off walk and that’s the go ahead run that could jump start an offense that’s really struggled to score in this one. Don’t want to wake a team up with the free pass. And here comes the Mariners manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Luis Castile won’t go any further. And it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Now, new pitcher for the Mariners, Caleb Ferguson, bringing in the lefty with the left-handed hitter coming up to hit. Classic move right here. So, we’ll see how it works out. [Applause] Colt Pete up now for the Tigers. He is singled and he has fly to left. [Applause] There’s the strike. Oh, this is a case of just slowing the game down. Sometimes you get so concerned with getting the job done, you forget that you still have to get a good pitch to do the job with. bunch it towards the mound on the run. Sends it over to first. Nicely done for the out. That’s a good piece of hitting right there. The job is to move the runner up and give your team a chance to score the go-ahad run. That’s exactly what happened. So, you better believe your teammates are happy with you after that at bat. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. Now, here’s the Detroit catcher Dylan Dingler. got it started a little too early. Strike one. Movement in the bullpen. Emerson Hancock preparing to come on if needed. Bazardo also throwing. Swinging a miss. chased it out of the zone with the go-ahead run standing at second here in the late stages of game three line drive base hit drill comes in quickly holds that go ahead run at third and there’s still one away just a nice job coming through in a pretty high lever spot right there showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way didn’t get jumpy didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep, took the barrel right to it, and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. Now, that sets up a huge bat in this ball game. Here’s the third baseman, Zack McKinstry, fouled off. He was late in the infield at the corner. Don’t be surprised to see them come home first and prevent that run from scoring with the go ahead run at third here in game three of this American League Division Series. wide drive. He makes the catch and there’s two down. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact and that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. Now it’s Javier Bayz. in for a strike 01. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. fall off foul. The shorts stop takes the ball. That’s a really good take. [Applause] Huge strike out there. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. [Applause] Bottom of the seventh. Auio Suarez up to hit now. And that drops in for a strike. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Raphael Monttero up and throwing. Melton also getting ready. [Applause] Swinging a miss. Oh, and two now. Build the chain up right there. Just pulled the string. Pitch is in the dirt and the count is one and two [Applause] and that’s down and away. That misses the zone and it’s three and two. Good purpose pitch right there trying to tease him, get him to raise his sights, pop something up and make it an easy out. That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. Well, he’s starting to look a little gassed to me. And we’ll see if they go to the bullp. Here’s the left fielder, Dominic Panzone. [Applause] And that one fouled off. The lefty closing in on 100 pitches. Man, he’s been really good about to hit that 100 pitch mark here in the seven. Man, we’ll see how far they’re going to ride him, but it’s been pretty good so far. There’s one and two in time to first for the double play. Oh man, what a super double. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. [Applause] Here’s Victor Robless. [Applause] Right through there for a strike. [Applause] Swang and a miss. There’s that change up. More and more guys are looking to slug regardless of the count in this situation. We’ll keep a close eye on his approach. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Man, he’d like to have that pitch back. [Applause] Next offering upstairs [Applause] and there’s a ball. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the seventh. That one misses. Ball three. JP Crawford in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here liner base hit. Zoe gets on base and keeps it going. Showed a lot of fight with two strikes in that AB. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. And here comes the Tigers manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Tick Scooble out of the game. And he was a tough nut to crack. Pretty stingy from start to finish. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Now, Raphael Montero taking over on the mound. Raphael Monttero. [Applause] So, two down and now for Seattle. JP Crawford [Applause] basketball for a strike. Well, with both starters out of the game, this quickly becomes a bullpen game. And this is something we see more and more in the game today, especially in the postseason. [Applause] Robless runs pitch in for a strike. Save with a stolen base. Now the go ahead runs in scoring position. So big opportunity for them to jump ahead late. [Applause] Hammer base hit Robless rounds third headed for the plate. The tag and he’s safe and it’s one nothing. Does a great job of letting that runner steal second base. Get in the scoring position. Come through with the base knock. You had a run. Runner [Applause] first with two away. Now it’s Randy Rosarena. 0 for three in this one. That’s outside. Ball one. [Applause] [Applause] Swing and a chopper out to short. Bayz fires over to first. They get the out on Rosarena. That’s the third out. Inning over, but they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now one- nothing. This is the American League Division Series on the show. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Emerson handcuff. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. Just missed. [Applause] Looking to get the tying run on base. Swing and a ground ball out to short. Tosses across the first. Lead off man is out here in the eighth. If you want to be a great defense, you have to deliver consistently. It doesn’t matter how many highlight reel plays you make if you can’t execute the small stuff just like we saw. [Applause] Torres stands in here, takes ball one low. Action in the pen down there. Andres Munoz, the closer of the staff, is throwing. [Applause] And this is inside two ball. No strike on the ground to the left. It’s through for a hill and that puts the tying run on base. [Applause] The white beauty number [Applause] substitution now at first base. Pinch running here. Trey [Applause] one down. Runner at first. Next to hit Carrie Carpenter one for three. [Applause] First pitch doesn’t find the zone. trying to hold a one-run lead and we’re in the top of the eighth. And another ball would lay off that pitch down. And now two balls in a strike. Two balls, one strike. [Applause] Just missed. That’s good pitch there. Had some run and finished up and in just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. Hit a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout and ball forward. True board. Well, this could be the start of something. They haven’t found a way to score yet, but now’s their chance to change that. Bradley Green digs in for a critical bat. Three pitch strike out last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. And there’s the strike. Well, in this situation with runners on, you’ve got to get ahead in the count that you can dictate the rest of the at bat. Nice job right there. And that is out of play. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in the spot. Swing and he’ll knock him out and two away now. Oh, tough night at the dish. Watching out for the third time right there. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable at the plate. A little unsure of his timing right now. Not picking up the spin and location of these pitches. He’ll have some adjustments to make. Spencer Torqulson up now for the Tigers. Couple of walks and a strike out. Up and in. Ball one. One more. No strike. So the tying run at second and that misses. And now two and 0. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Hard ground ball from based plate. He’ll score and it’s an RBI single and they tie it late here in game three. Picks himself up an RBI. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. Now, a huge bat in this game coming up. And here comes the Mariners manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Emerson Hancock done for the night. And the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. [Applause] Now pitching. They hand the ball over to a new arm, Gabe Spire. and they felt it was time to bring on a left-handed reliever from the pin with the lefty hitter coming up. I think it’s a good move. I know I never liked when opposing teams did that to me. [Applause] So, the go-ahead run is into scoring position. Colt Keith up now for the Tigers. First pitch just misses. Lots of anxious fans in the ballpark right now. You can feel it. [Applause] just missed. Carpenter at second. Torlson at first. Two out of the inning. [Applause] At this point of the game, you cannot issue free passes. He’s going to have to challenge this hitter. Hitter’s got to be ready to swing it. Dylan Dingler in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. And they’re all loaded up. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire bat. And up next for Detroit, Dylan Ding, this has been a good one. A really good game to this point and huge opportunity with the bases loaded. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Some hitters are just more confident they can track that first pitch out of the hand of the pitcher. They don’t care if they fall behind 01. Two outs. One ball, one strike. That catches the top part of this zone. One and two. So they’re all loaded up. Swing and a miss and he got him in and over. And it could have been worse. But the RBI single pushes across a run. All even at one a piece. You’re watching the American League Division Series on the Show. Out of the bottom of the eighth and the batter now, Cal Raleigh Monttero back to work. Swing and a miss. Strike one. That split is a pretty nasty pitch. explodes out of the hand. Looks like a fast ball and the bottom just falls out of it. Into ball one. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. One ball, two strikes. [Applause] That one just misses. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit [Applause] and it’s filled up. Julio Rodriguez in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] Montro fires. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Well, that’s a nice job that pitches ends up drawing the wall. Very no outs. Runner at first. Julio Rodriguez getting ready to hit and the first pitch misses for ball one. That one is absolutely bel. But it falls and now it looks like extra bases. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. That pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Really important at bat coming up now. Here’s Josh Taylor. Golden opportunity right here. That’s in there. And that’s strike. [Applause] and fouled off. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of in the air out towards right center. Carpenter under it. makes the grab and there’s one away. The batter number seven, second baseman Jorge. Now it’s the second baseman, Jorge Palano, known for his late inning heroics. You have to be able to get runners in when they’re in scoring position, especially in the postseason. These situations can define a season. [Applause] swings and misses. Strike one. Definitely a strikeout situation right here. Lots of ways for that go-ahead run to score if the ball’s put in play. Two on, one out. And that misses and one and one. Here’s a side situation and he’s got to make sure he gets the ball out over the plate and get those arms extended. They’re trying to crowd him with the infield in. Be a big pick off if he can push a run across. [Applause] The one two keeps the bat going with a foul ball with the go ahead run in third. The bottom half of the eighth inning. Skips in and excellent work to corral that one. Could have been dangerous. Two two now. Swing and a highf fly ball. That one out towards left center field way back there and it’s off the wall. One runs in. A second scores as well and they lead by two. Such great concentration. Everybody on their feet knowing that you can come through with a good swing. And there he doesn’t try to do too much. And here comes the Tigers manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Raphael Montero won’t go any further. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. [Applause] Now pitching for Kaider Montero on a pitch out of the pen here. And we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. One of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. Au Suarez up to the plate now [Applause] and it’s fouled away. [Applause] Oh, great stop. Throw to first and very nicely done for the out. The left fielder number eight, Javis Kento. So two down now and here is Dominic Panzone. Intentional walk here with two out. They set up a force at any base to end the inning. Mike number Victor Robless now at the plate. Rob left and a ground ball to first. Torqulson steps on the bag that ends the inning and they limit the damage, but they’ll pick up a couple runs here. Both coming on this two-run double. Last chance coming up here for the Tigers. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Andres Munoz. And I can’t imagine any save is an easy one with a small lead on the scoreboard. And you know those hitters are going to give you the best at bats they can. So it’s always high stress. Let’s see what he’s got here to try and close it out. Zack McKinstry digs in now. just missed Munoz in his sixth season, 26 years old and he’s a native of Mexico. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. Outside low and it’s two and one. [Applause] Late swing fouled to the left. Some heat there at 98 mph. Well, that right there is what you want to see out of your closer. Come in and close the door. cancel any hope that that opponent has in making some type of comeback in the ball game. Tell you what, that helps him settle in and that helps everybody else relax a little bit to get these other two outs. Bayz batting with one down takes the strike. Now one bases empty one away here in the late stages of game three. Foul ball still a one and two count swing and a miss and he chases that one in the dirt. Raleigh collects, fires to first and there’s two gone following the strike out. This is definitely what a team likes to see out of their closer to come in and just destroy all hope. First two batters, two strikeouts. See if he can strike out the side. So they’re down to their final out. And now the center fielder Jamai Jones in there at the knees for a strike. No ball. One strike. [Applause] Two down, nobody on here in game three of this American League Division Series. Next one misses. And now it’s even one and one. One strike pulls that one foul. [Applause] The Tigers down to their final strike and the one two misses to even the count. [Applause] Ground ball and this should do it. Palanco on the run. Throw to first and the Mariners are moving on. They’re headed to the American League Championship Series. [Applause] Heat. Heat. [Applause] [Applause] Heat. Heat.
