I see Plastic Love as the gateway to City Pop.
Think it was one of the first videos that YouTube really pushed to me on the algorithms. And I
know everybody knows the song. Literally through Instagram, Tik Tok. Do you know how many times
I’ve heard Plastic Love played over the top of a video that someone’s uploaded? But it’s a banger.
It’s a banger. There’s no denying Plastic Love is a banger. Sung by Mariya Takeuchi. She wrote
the song as well. Arranged by Tatsuro Yamashita. Obviously, it’s a banger. Husband and wife
coming together, making an absolute masterpiece. Obviously, I’ve heard the song, but I’ve not
heard the live version that happened in 2000, and that’s what we’re going to be listening to
today. It was performed at the Nippon Budokan. Just read that this was like originally built
for Olympic judo competition, but the Beatles have performed there. ABBA’s performed there. So
I think it became a place where music was just as prevalent as martial arts. So yeah, this is
her performance in the year 2000. 25 years ago now. Jeez. At the Nippon Budokan. I’m excited to
see what the performance was like here. 25 years ago, live, Plastic Love… let’s do this. Headphones on. We’re ready. We’re ready to rock and roll. She looks amazing. I know he’s probably going to be
somewhat famous. I always get told, “Hey, that’s a famous such and such player.” That live version just reminded me how good this
damn song is. Sometimes you just you need to hear the live version to then rejig your memory
and just be like and do you know what Tatsuro Yamashita you need to settle yourself because you’re
taking the shine away from your wife. You can’t be doing that. Okay, that’s a dangerous game. No,
I’m joking. That was… Yeah! The song obviously is just… it’s viral now. like well it’s been viral
for ages but the live performance there was… that was magical to see them both on stage
that was so good so good ah, Plastic Love. I have to listen to that again I think, that’s put me
in a good mood… but yeah until next time, peace!
