The film I’d like to introduce today is “Boy Kills World.” It’s an action film about a young man named “Boy” who loses his family and his voice and hearing , and fights for revenge. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world where civilization has collapsed. The Van der koy clan controls the people through fear by conducting public executions called “cullings” once a year. The protagonist, “Boy,” loses his family to the Van der koy clan and also loses his hearing and voice. Rescued by a mysterious shaman just before his death, Boy undergoes rigorous training to become an assassin dedicated to defeating the Van der koy clan. Once a fully-fledged assassin, Boy enlists the help of the resistance and finally exacts revenge against the Van der koy clan. This film sandwiches a serious main storyline—a quest for revenge against the murderer of his family— with elements of black comedy and relentless gore. The film alternates between comedy and seriousness, creating a wide emotional range throughout, yet the story unfolds at a brisk, rollercoaster pace. Directed by Moritz Mohr, a German director, this is his feature film debut. Having described himself as a die-hard gamer in interviews, the film incorporates video game-inspired elements throughout. While the setting is a post-apocalyptic setting, the visuals, including the protagonist “Boy”‘s red jacket, are pop and colorful, creating a unique style that complements the quirky characters. Sam Raimi, known for “Evil Dead” and the “Spider-Man” series, is also involved in the production of this film, providing support to Mohr, who is making his feature film debut, with assistance in the scriptwriting and editing. While each character in the film is deeply personal, the highlight of the film is undoubtedly Bill Skarsgård, who plays the title character. The film’s protagonist, “Boy,” is mute and therefore speaks no lines throughout the film, making for a challenging role, but Skarsgård delivers a brilliant performance. The role of the shaman, who trains Boy to become a top-tier assassin, is played by Yayan Ruhian, who rose to fame with his role in “The Raid . ” A master of the Indonesian martial art of silat, Ruhian once again displays superhuman feats of action in this film. Benny and Basho also appear alongside Boy as resistance fighters against the Van der koy clan. These two play important roles in the film’s comedic elements. Benny always speaks in code, making his lines incomprehensible to the naked eye, while Basho is a high-energy character throughout. The presence of these allies provides a kind of solace amid the bloody battles unfolding in this film. The villains in this film are also impressive. Hilda, the matriarch of the Van der koy clan, is a highlight, as is her fateful relationship with the shaman. Hilda’s younger brother, Gideon, is portrayed as a somewhat melancholic character , disgusted by the reality that he cannot realize his dreams . Hilda’s sister, Melanie, serves as the family’s public relations officer and is as insane as Hilda. Furthermore, Melanie’s spouse, Glen, is portrayed as a lovable character, albeit with a detestable side. And June 27th, the Van der koy family’s bodyguard and rival to the protagonist, is a character whose name remains a mystery until the very end. The action scenes are a major highlight of this film, of course . The fighting style, which combines hand-to-hand combat with firearms, and the structure of defeating enemy bosses one by one, are as fun as breaking through “stages” in a video game. The high-energy allies throughout, the gore scenes with flying blood, and the ensemble of comedic elements transform this film into something more than just an action movie, but one tinged with insanity. Skarsgård’s action scenes as the protagonist are sharp and impressive, successfully establishing a new image as a film actor. The film’s narrative structure is designed around a classic revenge tale, but the ending adds a twist to the plot . The Japanese title, “Bakuken Kaikai Ruten Shou Retsuden,” is no joke; it reveals that the protagonist actually destroys the world. In summary, this film is recommended for action movie fans. While there are some gore scenes, the sharp fighting scenes are enjoyable. And above all, it’s a must-see for Bill Skarsgård fans. While he has often appeared with special makeup in films such as “IT” and “Nosferatu,” this film gives us ample glimpses of his natural face without the special makeup. That’s all for today’s video.
