Hello and welcome to Rez World Travel. Flam railway is one of the most stunning train journeys in the world. This incredible trip takes you through the heart of Norway’s dramatic fjord and mountain landscape. A quick tip for anyone planning to visit, you can start this journey from either the village of Flam or the mountain station of Myrdal depending on your travel plans. For our trip today, we are starting our adventure right here in the beautiful village of Flam. Flam is a picturesque village nestled at the innermost end of the Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the mighty Sohgnefjord, Norway’s longest and deepest fjord. Renowned globally, it serves as a popular hub for experiencing the stunning Norwegian fjords, and is a key stop for the famous Flam Railway. This charming port village offers visitors a gateway to dramatic landscapes, serene waters and adventurous activities amidst unparalleled natural beauty. Before you leave Flam, be sure to stop by the Flam Railway Museum, located right next to the station. This is a must visit for anyone fascinated by the history and engineering of the line. The museum offers free entry and provides a deeper look into the construction of this incredible railway, showcasing old artifacts and historical information that bring the journey to life. Now let’s start our journey on this incredible railway. As the train starts, its ascent will immediately be greeted by the breathtaking Flam Valley. Look out for the Flam River, which you’ll see meander through the valley floor, carving its way through the landscape. As you travel, you’ll witness a spectacular panorama of steep mountain cliffs, lush green valleys, and dramatic cascading waterfalls. The train also navigates through 20 tunnels and crosses rivers that have carved deep ravines. Over time. The journey itself is a mere 20km long, but it’s an hour long experience designed to be savored. This railway is a masterpiece of engineering, with a gradient of 5.5% over 80% of the journey, making it one of the steepest standard gauge railways in the world. Originally built to connect the Bergen Line with the Sognefjord, its construction was a massive undertaking. With most of the tunnels being dug by hand, it’s no wonder Lonely Planet once named it the world’s most beautiful train journey. The Rallar Road is a historic construction road originally built to support the construction of the Bergen Line today it’s a popular scenic route for hiking and cycling, offering breathtaking views of the rugged mountain landscape. We’re now approaching the famous Kjosfossen waterfall. This is one of the journey’s most magical moments. And the train will make a brief stop. So we can get out and feel the powerful spray as we admire the cascading water. You might notice a mysterious lady in a red dress dancing and singing on the ruins near the waterfall. This is the Huldra, a mythical forest spirit from Norse folklore. Legend has it that she is a beautiful creature who lures men into the woods with her enchanting song. The performance is a magical tribute to Norwegian mythology and a highlight of the trip. After our brief stop at Kjosfossen , we’ll continue our climb to Myrdal. The landscape will become even more rugged and mountainous, with less greenery and more open vistas. Keep an eye out for any remaining snow, even in the summer months. We’ve now arrived at Myrdal Station the end of our journey. Myrdal is a remote mountain station where the Flam Railway connects with the main Oslo Bergen Line, acting as a crucial hub for travelers in the heart of the Norwegian mountains. As you can see, there are people waiting here to catch this very same train. They’re about to start their incredible descent back down to Flam, experiencing the same beautiful journey in reverse.
