畑のトラブル:農業は臭いがするが、伐採は楽か?ローラ農場
So, if uh you’ve been keeping posted on our military truck excavans, we had a video where we drove around in the riverbed and Grant and dad got terribly stuck. I I mean, it just did not work very well. We bought this thing cuz we wanted to tool around the river, maybe put some kind of rig on the back of this thing, and the river just was not the move. Anyways, Grant like tore apart the drive shaft. Like, the thing got so stuck, it just wrecked. It tore itself apart essentially. And so Grant finally rescued it and barely got it put on a trailer and the pickup I I can’t believe the pickup is hauling this. What’s your plan from here, Grant? What are you thinking? I got a drive shaft from Ship from Colorado Supply or something. Okay. I put the back axle back in. I put it all back together. So, we can go grab that truck and it’ll be 100%. Uh, I don’t know. I don’t know what the plan is now. It’s really I don’t know. I thought we’d use it more on the farm. We really haven’t, but we’ll maybe take it out on one more drawer ride with dad’s military truck, but it might be for sale. It was a really, really fun project. It was a great project. So, we will definitely keep you guys posted on this. Beware, wide load coming through. So, here’s the part I’m nervous about. We have to go underneath a bridge and I’m like 99% they’re going to clear under it. I don’t know. We’ll see. Oh, plenty of room. We’re golden. Home free. As you guys know, Grant and I spend a lot of time at gas stations. Uh we are always on the run. Right now, we are headed to a weekend in Wyoming to ride side by sides with our friends. Um, anyways, I’ve put a lot of gallons worth worth of diesel into this pickup and I’ve started earning money when I do it. So, I checked in with the Upside app at Pump and Pantry and right now I’m earning 41 cents back on every gallon I put in. So, if you would like to save money every single time you put gas into your tank, you need to download this app. To get started, download the free Upside app in the Google Play or Apple Store. Use my code Laura Farm to get $5 cash back on your first purchase of $10 or more with the Upside app. All you have to do is check in, fill up, scan your receipt, and start earning cash back. Living in a rural area, I was pleasantly surprised with how many deals and offers I could find really close to me. Upside of the app, for anyone who buys groceries, gets gas, or dimes out. What are you going to do with your cash back? Good afternoon, everybody. You’ll never believe what I’m doing. Actually, you definitely will. Um, I’m I’m out at the cornfield or a corn field with dad because we have two flat pivot tires, two of them. So, we brought the tea handler out. Luckily, it’s on the end tower, which is really nice. So, we can use the tea handler to lift the pivot up. And then, we don’t we only have one spare tire, so I’m going to have to take the rims in and get them replaced with new tires. Uh, honestly, this job used to really scare me, but I feel like I’ve done it enough. Doesn’t bother me. And it’s also the most beautiful day outside. Sunny 75, slight breeze. One might call this the perfect day. Here’s our muddy track. What we got here? Right off the rim. Here’s our new one we have. But this one looks like it was just pushing mud. Teleander is going to come in handy. Since we did already have to knock down some corn to get the teleah handler out here. Not too much, I might add, but I pulled off a cob of corn. Ear corn from one of the stocks we knocked over. It is beautiful. Old tire is successfully off. It was definitely a joint effort. It’s very slippery around here. We got the new tire close lined up and we’re just trying to adjust adjust it so it’s just right. See what we got. Now that looks close. Okay, this has been quite a job here. We got this one off. Not yet on this one. And we have like three tires that don’t work. This is ridiculous. My goodness. Brought Grant along with me because I didn’t think I could unload these pivot tires by myself. They’re pretty heavy, but took them into the co-op to get fixed. Definitely. Thanks, Grant. So, somehow while we waiting for the tires to be done, I got roped into a job. Grant said the payment for him unloading the tires for me was for me to haul this rock out to his stuck pivot. Now, that does not seem like a fair trade to me, but I couldn’t have unloaded those tires without him, so I guess I’ll take what I can get. It’s pretty sloppy out here. Understandable why the pivot got stuck. We’ll see if he can make it through this mud hole. [Music] So, we’ve got a corn field right there and then right next to it is a bean field. And luckily, the pivot is in the beans. And also, luckily, I’m wearing my waterproof pants because there’s lots of dew on the plants right now, this early in the morning. Um, and also luckily it’s only the second tower. So we got the pivot point here, then the first tower, and then the second tower. Got a lot of rock to carry. I’m having flashbacks from last year. Think get two bags in one shot. You think I’m stronger than I was last year? [Music] Is that going to work? [Music] Halfway there. I severely underestimated how far I had to walk. These bags are one cubic foot each of the pokeiest rock you could get. [Music] You good? Fall over. All right. right behind you. Okay. So, we only assumed it was stuck. No, I mean, it technically is. I mean, well, yeah, but like it’s not moving cuz the tire’s flat. So, this lava rock is not going to do us any good. We need stuff to pivot tire. Lovely. H, which we do not have. Oh boy. And back out of the field. These beans are really, really tall. My pants. I thought they were waterproof. And they are waterproof, but I don’t know. I feel kind of wet. All right. Muscles. You think there’s a mouse in here? I know there’s a mouse in there. Why do you think I’m I’m I got one leg up. Ready? I saw something move. I don’t know what. Yeah, it is going that way. Excellent. I love the sunflowers. I think they’re so pretty. Tailgate. Yep. All a rock that we don’t actually need. I’ll help you lift the tire up. Are you sure? Yeah. Let her bang. Oh crap. Yuck. All right, we’re going for a world record speed tire change. Grant is rolling the tire out. I’ve got PD Blaster in my back pocket and I’ve got to figure out how to carry this, this, this, and the shovel. Think I can do it in one trip? So, I set a timer on my phone for 15 minutes. I’ve already had to run back to pickup. I got all the lug nuts off. Grant got it jacked up. Okay, tire’s loose. Tire is loose and all the lug nuts are off. Get these PV blaster out of the way. Ready? Yeah. Kick her off. [Music] Make sure everything lines up. We are pretty fast at changing tires, huh? Timer hasn’t gone off yet. We’re still under 15 minutes. My hands are getting shaky, but it’s probably from that coffee we had this morning, huh? Any lugg nuts. Okay, I’m going give it one more. [Music] And there you go. That was a tire change in 12 minutes. Now I just have to take everything back to pickup and go pick up my tires that are done. Do the same thing over again. Eat that. Other irrigators. Yeah. New tires are loaded up. Headed to go put them on. Um, so I didn’t end up changing those two pivot tires. I delivered them to dad and he said, “Do you want to go golfing?” I’ve never been golfing before, so we’re trying it out. I love it. This is way better than changing pivot tires. How’s your game today, Dad? Is that a good Hanging in there? Good. Good. Doing a lot better than I was last week. [Music] I’m going [Music] [Music] to [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] How high up are we right now, Grant? Over 10,000 ft. Maybe even over 11,000. We’re way up here. This is crazy. We are 10,761 ft up in the air. Wow. Just I don’t know. This is gorgeous. I love doing stuff like this so much. Coffee shop said drive-thru only. So, I guess we’re just driving through with what we have. Grant, have you been enjoying our trip so far? Been beautiful. Beautiful weather. A little bit of rain, nice and cool. The scenery is amazing. Took a quick stop in our day because the trail goes through a logging area and there’s a lot of logging that goes on in this area of Wyoming. And my goodness, this equipment. I don’t know if you guys have ever seen Oh, there’s a deer. Do you see that deer? Grant, look. See that deer? That’s so cool. Anyways, we see a lot of wild. We saw a moose yesterday. Um, seeing logging equipment in action is so cool. [Music] Okay, just real quick, you want to see something awesome? So, we came from way over there, drove all the way down, snaking and curling all the way around. I think there was a big forest fire that came through here like maybe 2 years ago. So, stuff is still growing back, but it’s just awesome to be able to see through the trees. We’re on the far side of the mount, that mountain over there. We’ve gone how many miles today? um likeund some like 130 and there’s still like 20 miles 128.6. This whole weekend we’ve gone a little over 300 miles and that is so cool. I just love seeing the outdoors. Beautiful out here. Hello everybody. Say good morning to Betty. She definitely wants to say good morning to you. This is like the most hyper dog ever. This is Grant’s parent stuff. Ready? Say hi. All right, so exciting exciting news. As you can see behind me, we have a I was going to say brand new, a new to us combine and it’s going to be put to action very, very soon. I actually just got off the phone. Um, seed corn harvest is starting today. Uh, commercial corn harvest isn’t quite ready. The corn is still too wet. Actually, a lot of the ears are still up. They haven’t dropped yet, and so they’re still filling out all the kernels. However, Grant was showing me around to his harvest setup, and I just had to share it with you guys. So, this is a new torant combine hooked on to their head from last year. And the corn reel, I don’t know if you guys remember this. Last year, we had a ton of wind and corn was just flattened. And so we got a corn reel hooked up from Patriot Equipment. We love those guys. That’s who got us our seat tender this spring. Um, so that is still on that needs to be taken off because we haven’t had any recent winds this year. So the corn is standing which is great. Then I’ll just take you on a little tour here. We have the bean head sitting over here. This this bean head’s also new to us. Oh, really? I didn’t know that. It’s I think it’s only a couple years old. Look how there’s still paint on the rotor. Look at that. This is my first time seeing all this and I’m just like drooling. Wow. Yeah, you guys have a red combine. This is pretty. Lord likes green. I do. Yeah. Look, the paint isn’t even wore off this thing. Okay. Now, now, now we have the grain cart set up. Oh, it is fabulous. So, in previous years, you’ve only had one grain cart, correct? Yes. This year made a little bit of a change and it upgraded. So, now they’re going to have two grain carts running. Check this out. Almost identical tractors. We do need to put the duels back on this one. I think that’s our project together, right? You want to help me do that this evening? Yeah, I’ll help you out with that. This is a really, really nice looking setup, Grant. You can find me in here. You want to drive with it this year? This is awesome. So last night I had a dream slashnightmare that it was time to harvest. Like all our crops were ready to go and we hadn’t done anything to prepare. And so I was like, “Huh, oh man, I totally just saw a mouse. This building is infamous for having mice all over it.” With that being said, I’m just going to start our combine, pull it out, give it a little looks over. Um, we have some things to do in the shop today, but the first thing to do is to make sure this even starts because the battery historically goes dead. So, we’ll see. Good news. Common started. Cab is a little musty looking. Before harvest gets uh really started, I will definitely need to do a full cab clean out. Um, it smells like harvest in here. I’m excited, you guys. So, in previous years, I’ve just been a grain cart driver, but this year, or last year, I guess, I took over as the full-time combine operator. And let me just say, I’m tired of irrigating. I am so thankful for pivots because we haven’t had a measurable rain in so long. But I’m ready to just shut them off and be done. Now, before I can back this out, we’re going to have to get the feed truck out. And I just know a mouse is going to run out. [Music] Ah, okay. Maybe not. Go away, mice. Go away, mice. I’m very scared of you. Oh my goodness. I knew it. I hate mice. I know everyone thinks it’s so silly that I don’t like mice, but they’re so destructive. They chew on wires and ruin everything. And what if it like crawled at my leg or something? I don’t know. They’re gross. I’m just going to let that air out for a little bit. I think I got most of them out. But just to be safe, I’m going to drive with a door open and my foot out like that and nothing touching the ground. I pulled the combine up to the front of the shop and it is time to fix this whole situation and then check all the tires and we’re going to give it a good blow off. Um since we we blew it off after harvest last year, but it’s been sitting in a building um that has dirt floors and so every time we move equipment in and out, it just gets kind of eh. We’re going to fix all that. I made it on top of the combine. There’s a little ladder that flips down and then some more stairs to crawl up. When we’re uh rolling, we usually dad likes to put American flag up on here and then we put this railing up and we have a flag flying. It’s pretty cool. Um, but I’m just looking on the inside and we wanted to replace that last year, but can’t really get things to replace things. And also, the augur is kind of I don’t know if you can tell. Those are ratchet straps holding it together. Definitely band-aids that turned into long-term fixes. I’m going to take this air filter off here and give it a quick clean. So, we actually have this really cool tool for air filter cleaning. Look at this. So, it fits on the top of any type of filter. And these things spin around really fast. So, you just hook it up to your airline here and then you turn the little valve. Okay. Ready? And then you just move it. Look at that. I would call that much better. This is kind of a fun game I like to play. This is the toolbox that’s like built into the combine. And I feel like I always find some kind of treasure left over from last year. Look at that. So, I expected to see this. This one we keep with the combine. You should probably charge that battery up. Take that out. Looks like all the standard stuff. No surprises. Luckily, no mice. Let’s see about this one. Okay. Everything needs to be blown out. That’s gross. [Applause] I love little mini tools just cuz I feel like they fit in my hand so nicely. Since we got a new head this year, we won’t be needing this. This was some kind of like, let’s see here, gearing off. Look like it was to move a reel or I don’t know. It went with the It went with our old head. So, this needs to go with that, not with our new one. You guys get to see a lot of the farm and like farm life and stuff I’m doing. Um, but something about the experience that you guys are missing out on is like obviously the temperature. Like I can feel the sunshine on my face right now. It’s supposed to be in the ‘9s, that early September heat. It is still like in the 90s every single day. Um, but something you guys are missing out on is the smell. So, there’s a lot of different smells on the farm. Um, midsummer you can smell like the corn pollinating. Um, but something on our farm is that we have hog buildings. We don’t do a lot with them. We just rent them out. But the smell of the hogs on the farm is absolutely atrocious. Like, it is an assaulting smell. Um, and after like the first 5 to 10 minutes on the farm or like because I work out almost every single day, I’m kind of used to it. But like the smell of hog manure is so gross. It It’s disgusting. I would take cattle manure over hog manure any single day of the week. If you worked around both, you totally understand what I’m saying. Um, I don’t know. Cows smell kind of good to me. Hogs do not. And unfortunately, that is something that I just I just have to deal with. But I wanted to show you guys um along with our harvest prep, we have a new to us corn hood that we’re going to be using this year. And I am very, very excited about it. You guys remember the sprayer? It died out in the middle of the field. Um quite an unfortunate situation. We thought we had a solution to it. that we found a remand engine um in Florida for quite cheap or cheaper than we thought it was going to be and we had it shipped up here and sent to the shop where the sprayers at so we can get it installed. Turns out it is not the right size. It will not fit. So we are back to square one with our sprayer. So, if anyone has a let’s see, what is that? 4315 Miller Mercedes engine, I need one. Part of what prepping for harvest means to me is that this thing has to go. Has to go. We unhooked it here and have been working on it on and off. Uh oh. Uh this this is a split row planter. So, we use it to plant the seed corn males. Um, we’ve been working on it on and off all summer and in theory it’s ready to go and now it’s just become like a resting place for things. And so, my goal for today is to hook it up and put it away. But before we put it away, we need to test all the electronics and make sure we got all the electronics put on right. So today we have to get this thing out of here so that we can get our harvest equipment in and go through it and make make sure everything’s ready to go. [Music] [Music] We tested everything out. Plugged all the electronics. Hydraulics in. Split row planter works. Everything reads on the monitor. So now we’re going to put it away in the building. Feels so good. Sometimes I feel like I get a little too comfortable seeing things. So now that the split row planter is gone, there’s so much room for activities. I love it. So just going to load these blocks up. Meet dad at the dirt for building. This doesn’t happen very often. Oh, I can hear myself echo. The only thing we have in here is fencing trailer and the cultivator. It’s weird. Something pretty cool we have going on today. Um, seed corn harvest. So, this is done a lot differently than commercial corn harvest. The seed corn is harvested on the ear. Um, so like the whole cobb is taken into the plant and then it’ll be processed at the plant and then treated and bagged and planted next year to be planted. Um, and it is just a really unique operation. This is all done by a custom crew that comes in. So they have the picker down there and it’s taking all the ears directly into that cart. And then the carts are dumped like by this like uh they dump like this on their sides and put into those semi-truckss and hauled to the plant. Last year I got the opportunity to actually run one of the pickers and so I will link that video in the description of this one. You have to watch that. It’s so cool and you can see the inside of the cab and everything that happens. So the picker drags a cart behind him, pulls a cart behind him and picks the corn into it. And then a dump cart drives alongside him and the picker will dump into the dump cart. The dump cart runs back to the truck and the picker keeps going. They have two pickers and three dump carts out in the field right now. Um 160 acres. They should have it done by the end of the day. [Music] beans are so sharp and pokey to walk through. But I just wanted to show you guys. Let’s just pick this one right here. Look at how loaded down these things are. Beans everywhere. So, when you hear someone say beans have turned, as you can see, the general color of the field is no longer that deep, deep green. It’s kind of a lighter green, and you’re starting to see some yellowing. So, they’ve turned and these pods are really filling out. Looking to have as many of these as possible. Instead of having three beans, there’s four beans in this pod. That’s ideal. I didn’t do the best job of getting him out of the pod, but there’s my soybeans looking good. They taste pretty good, too. The seed corn pickers did not get finished today. That’s okay. They will be back tomorrow. Um, and so I’m just going to get some pivots moved out of the way or starting to move out of the way so that when they come back tomorrow morning, things are all ready to go. So, for now, I’m signing off. Thanks for watching today’s video. Don’t forget I have merchandise available at the link in my description. Um, and check out the other videos I have. I film just about everything I do, so there’s lots of stuff out there. But, love you guys. And if you aren’t already subscribed, now’s your chance to do that. We’ll see you in the next one. Bye.
