築160年の古民家で人生初の五右衛門風呂。火加減が難しすぎて…

Hey guys, it’s Yuuka! Right now, I’m deep in the mountains of Miyazaki Prefecture. I was here recently for the Miyazaki part of my Japan road trip, and I ended up staying here for a while. But today, I found this super unique and quirky place to stay, so I’m gonna check it out for the night! Look at that! That old house over there! It seriously looks like something straight out of a Ghibli movie. I made it all the way here in Papa Clipper! The mountain road was suuuper rough getting here. It was all bumpy and rattly— but I pushed through and made it! Alright, let’s go take a look inside! Whoa… It looks like one of those old houses from textbooks! This house was actually built 160 years ago! And apparently, a lot of the original stuff is still here. This thing in the middle of the room— it’s called an irori, a traditional fireplace. You put charcoal underneath it, and you can grill meat and stuff right there! Omg, it’s a pig-shaped mosquito coil holder! I kinda wanna light it up. There are sooo many bugs out here in the mountains. So let’s fire up this mosquito coil and fight back! Get it? “Coil” in before the bugs attack? I was always in charge of this at my grandma’s house, so I’m kinda a pro. *Correction: I was actually just the official watcher, not the doer lol The owner lives in the house next door, and earlier they showed me around and explained everything. They told me I could use all the stuff here freely, like towels and things like that! There’s bath towels, face towels, and even bug spray! They’ve got everything I could need. Look, look! They’ve got a traditional outfit set here too! Should I try it on? *?!? Hey there, young’un! Where you from? Don’t recognize your face… Must be from the big city, huh? Always watchin’ them YouTubes… Kids these days, I swear… *Just a grumpy ol’ granny, no worries. How do I look? Does it suit me? Yaaay! Even the lighting in here has that old-school vibe— Wait no, that’s just a power outlet. Totally not old-school at all. It’s full-on modern tech, haha. This place is seriously amazing… It’s got everything you could think of—and it’s all so fun! There’s even a bar counter right here. And look at all that booze lined up! Believe it or not, it’s all-you-can-drink! The owner told me earlier— I can drink as much as I want! Kinda debating whether I should just polish off the whole shelf… What’s this thing? Is it like an old painting or something? Let’s see… Wait—it’s a TV?! A suuuper thin one too. And it’s got YouTube, Netflix, Hulu… all the good stuff! This thing is way too high-tech! Kinda wanna take it home with me… *If it fits in the van, I’m down So this old house actually doesn’t have any air conditioning. The owner said even if you put one in, the structure can’t really hold in the cool air, so it just escapes. That’s why fans are the real MVPs here! Alrighty, now let’s head into the room right in front of the entrance! This is the main bedroom, it looks like. It’s super spacious and cozy, love it. Check out this clothes-drying rod— It’s literally a tree branch! Gotta love the rustic vibes. There’s a dresser here too. Wait no, if I say it the old-school way— it’s a makeup table! This is where you’d put on lipstick, or tie up your hair and stuff. How elegant and refined~! Oh look, it’s *The Pillow Book*! (Makura no Sōshi) “In spring, it is the dawn… when the mountain edge slowly whitens.” “…bit by bit, the light creeps in…” “…and the clouds take on a faint purple hue across the sky…” “In summer, the night… especially when there’s a full moon…” “The mountain—uhh—” *Welp, my memory and articulation gave out lol Now let’s open this door over here and take a peek. It’s a super cute little sink area! Looks like this part got a nice renovation! Very stylish and chic, honestly. This wooden board is soooo nice! *And there’s a super vintage circuit breaker too They really put a lot of thought into the details here. And here’s the washing machine—free to use! The owner said I can use it anytime I want. Might throw in a load later~ Now what’s this door next to the sink? Oh, it’s the toilet! Super clean too! Let’s check out this other door over here… And ta-da! It’s the kitchen! On the other side, there’s a big dining… I mean, eating area. They’ve got everything all set up for me like this. Like rice over here… …drinking water… and even seasonings! They said I can use all of it! How sweet is the owner!? Seriously, their heart is as big as this house. If it were me… I’d probably… …not even let you touch a single grain of rice (stingy mode). There’s a wooden deck out this way. And over there is the owner’s house. Besides that, it’s just pure nature all around. The tap water here actually comes from underground spring water. Since it’s raining today, the water might be a bit cloudy, according to the owner. But no worries! They’ve got drinking water too, so I’m safe. I’ll just survive on that today! With the utmost grace… (I guess?) And now, the highlight of today’s stay… What could it be? A Goemon bath! How cool is that?! It’s my first time trying a Goemon-style bath. They’ve already got the water heating up like this. As long as the lid’s on, it keeps the heat in, so the water stays nice and toasty. They just lit the fire, so it should be heating up soon. Here’s how it’s set up! There’s even a shower attached, and you can enjoy the view while bathing too. Can’t wait to try it! I’ll be back here later! I stopped at the store on the way and bought some ingredients, so it’s a little early, but… I’m gonna go ahead and make dinner! Since I’m here, I wanna try cooking with the irori fire pit. I got bell peppers, shiitake mushrooms, eggplant— and even grabbed some Miyazaki beef! Oh, and I also picked up some corn! All the veggies I’m using today are locally grown here in Miyazaki. You’ve gotta eat the local goodies or you’ll regret it later, right? No food FOMO allowed! Ahh no, don’t look at my knife skills—they’re embarrassing! You’ll totally know I never cook at home… I’m not even sure I’m cutting this the right way… Pretty sure my mom would yell at me. Yeah… this is definitely wrong. But you know what? It’s fine. I’m the one eating it, so I make the rules! Once it’s cut up… everything looks delicious anyway, right? Alright, first let’s load some charcoal into the irori. Time to get that fire started! My very first irori fire! The owner showed me how to do it earlier, so I *should* be able to nail it! They said setting it up like this is the way to go. I finally got the fire going in the irori! It was kinda tough—I had to really work at it. I was using a gas burner on it non-stop. Anyway! Let’s get started with the Miyazaki beef! It looks sooo good. If I just eat meat, my nutrition’s gonna be a mess, so I’ll make sure to eat some veggies too! This whole irori thing— it’s like indoor camping and I’m loving it. There’s actual sand inside the house like this— Isn’t that kinda wild? Do any of you have an irori at home? Even my grandma’s house didn’t have one, so it must be way older than that. Like… maybe my grandma’s grandma’s house? Whoa, stuff cooks super fast! Amazing! Oh yeah! I made a drink earlier too! From the all-you-can-drink stash, I picked out peach liqueur! Alrighty, cheers! *It’s not beer, so technically I’m still on my no-alcohol streak Tastes great! Itadakimasu~! Looks soooo good! Mmm~ it’s delish (humming) Meat cooked over a fire you started yourself… hits on a different level. Last time on my Japan trip, I had fancy yakiniku… but honestly, this is just as good! It was bright outside just a moment ago, but sometime between 6 and 7, it got dark all of a sudden. It’s like night just snuck up on me! But hey, I’m still feelin’ bright and happy inside! I can hear the river and all the little insects… It totally feels like summer. Takes me back to summer break in elementary school. *Specifically, the last day of summer break when I hadn’t done my homework. *I remember giving up on everything and just munching on snacks… By the way, I booked this old house on an app called Airbnb. It cost me about 280 bucks just for one person (RIP wallet) Yeah, it’s kinda pricey… But you can actually stay with up to 6 people, and it’s the same price even if you bring friends! I mean come on, it’s a 160-year-old house with a Goemon bath! You don’t find places like this every day. So yeah, it was expensive, but… I kinda wanted to try something like this at least once in my life. So I guess it’s worth it. *Might as well live here a while to get my money’s worth. Being in an old house like this really reminds me of my grandma. I actually have a grandma in China too, and we were super close. She used to take me all over the place when I was little. She’d drive me to get fruit, meat, and snacks—like, constantly. Basically all she bought me was food lol My mom would always say “Eat more fruit!” But I was way more into meat, honestly. So my grandma would secretly buy me meat and I’d just go to town on it. That’s probably why I became such a meat-lover. I do like fruit too, don’t get me wrong! But y’know how when something’s off-limits as a kid, you end up loving it even more? Now that I’m an adult and can eat as much as I want, I kinda go overboard with it. *Like a meat version of Willy Wonka I was also told not to drink alcohol as a kid— so yeah, I love booze now too (maybe?) Ooh, the corn’s ready! Check out those grill marks! Okay then… Itadakimasu! Usually corn is super sweet and kind of raw-tasting, but this one’s got a mellow flavor. It’s got that grown-up taste to it (thanks to charcoal magic) Honestly, it wouldn’t feel out of place served alongside grilled meat at a BBQ. It’s that legit. *As always, please don’t expect pro-level food reviews from me lol I’ve always been into old houses and traditional culture, so I’m really happy I got to experience this. Gochisousama~ (Thanks for the meal!) That was seriously delicious. And now, the moment you’ve been waiting for— it’s time to hop in the Goemon bath! See ya soon! Alrighty, let’s get to today’s main event— trying out the Goemon bath! Okay, finally—the long-awaited bath! Ahh—it’s hot! It’s been a while, but it’s still crazy hot… Wow, there’s no reheat function or anything, but it’s still boiling hot! Alright, first time trying a Goemon bath… And this bath feels amaaazing! It feels like the water is about 45°C (113°F)—super hot. Isn’t this setup just wild? When the owner came by earlier, they said it looked like something out of Totoro. But… I’ve actually never seen Totoro. (Seriously.) I couldn’t just admit that though, so I was like “Haha… yeah totally…” Super awkward moment for me. *I mean the bath looked like Totoro—not me! If I were a character in Totoro… what would I be? Totoro, maybe? I mean, that’s literally the only character I know. So, to explain simply—Goemon baths are made from big iron pots. This thing I’m sitting in? It’s iron. And it’s heated directly with fire underneath. There’s firewood burning right under where I’m sitting now. So the water is literally boiled beneath me. That makes temperature control super tricky, but the owner gave me really detailed instructions. So now it’s juuust right—well, a little hot… but I’m in here soaking like a pro! It’s hard to see from here, but there’s a wooden board at the bottom, and thanks to that board, I don’t get totally scorched sitting down. There’s a nice buffer under my butt! You can really smell the wood from the bath mat. Even the base and walls around me are made entirely out of wooden slats. It smells sooo good in here. It’s getting a little too hot though, so I’m adding some cold water. You can add cold water, but not hot, so… I gotta be careful not to make it too cold now! The Goemon bath is totally a one-shot deal. It’s got that thrill factor— which makes it totally my vibe. That lantern behind me there— it’s an oil lantern. You pour oil in the base and light it up. That’s what’s glowing right now. Pretty cool, huh? Seriously, it’s awesome. The rim of the tub’s super hot too, If I’d gotten in right after heating, I probably couldn’t even touch it! But honestly, soaking in a Goemon bath has been a dream of mine—so I’m really happy right now. I’ve wanted to try one for ages, and I’d been searching online for so long… but they’re surprisingly rare. Couldn’t find one in Tokyo, and even nearby areas didn’t have any. There were a bunch of drum-style tubs, but real ones like this—with an iron pot and a wooden board inside— where you heat water from below—basically nonexistent. So finding one with a real Goemon bath is super rare. I didn’t expect to find such a beautiful place here in Kyushu. Totally feels like fate. I’ve actually come to Kyushu a bunch of times. Ever since I started riding ferries, I feel like I’ve visited pretty often. I’ve been to Oita, of course to Fukuoka, and even though it’s not in a video, I’ve actually been to Saga too! And I went to Kagoshima as well. Now I’m in Miyazaki—so that makes five prefectures I’ve visited! That just leaves Kumamoto and Nagasaki. I reaaally wanna go to those two! It’s kinda funny that those are the ones I’ve got left. But I love Kyushu so much, I’ll definitely be back again soon. Okay… it’s getting HOT… Like really hot… But if I cool it down too much, I’ll feel bad for the next person… Oh wait—there *is* no next person. Oops… If I stay in here too long, I’ll absorb too much Kyushu heat, turn into a boiled octopus, and float back into the sea (???) So I guess I’ll wrap it up here and hop out! The Goemon bath was honestly amazing. I’m back from the bath! It felt soooo good, seriously. *Uhh… something’s happening? Wait, what’s going on? If you’d like, how about a drink at our little old-house bar? Uhh, I’m actually trying not to drink right now… You don’t have to drink! Just some chatting. Come on, stay and hang out! Okay… fine. I won’t drink, but I can stay and talk for a bit… Thank you so much! Alright then, please have a seat at the counter. Just so we’re clear—I’m *only* here to chat. Not drinking, got it? That’s totally fine… right? Yeah no… that’s *not* fine. This is a bar, y’know? You gotta drink something! I’ve got just the thing for you, sis. How about this one? “Hyakunen no Kodoku” (A Hundred Years of Solitude) Perfect for a lonely girl like you, right? It’s a super famous shochu from Miyazaki! You’ve *got* to try it. Wait—it’s gone. Looks like we’re outta stock. But don’t worry, I’ve got a backup! This hyuganatsu liqueur—my top pick right now. Highly recommended! Please give it a try if you’d like. Hyuganatsu is also super famous here in Miyazaki! You *have* to try it! It’s ready—here you go! Uhh no wait, this isn’t what it looks like… I really wasn’t planning to drink… They just handed it to me like I had no choice… Cheers… Mmm, that’s good! Man, this old house has been such a blast. I got to soak in a Goemon bath, and there’s all-you-can-drink alcohol?! That’s wild! And grilling meat on the irori was so fun too. There’s no AC here, so it’s kinda hot— but I’m honestly getting used to the old-school vibes! Anyway, it’s getting late now, so after I finish this drink, I’ll go get my futon ready for bed. Got my futon all set up! Alright then, good night! Good morning! Last night I could hear the rain… and bugs chirping outside, and it really felt like I was in nature. This place had zero phone signal, and I was like “oh nooo…” But turns out the Wi-Fi was super fast! Total lifesaver. It’s actually faster than my Wi-Fi at home. Anyway, I’m gonna go make some breakfast now! *Honestly, they’ve got better kitchen gear than my place. I bought this meat yesterday—it was so good, I totally forgot I had sausages too. So today’s breakfast is gonna be sausages! Let’s just throw ‘em all in. Oh, and since there’s a kettle here, I’m gonna try boiling some water in it. Usually when I boil water, I just use an electric kettle, right? I hardly ever use a real stovetop kettle. This might actually be my first time boiling water like this! *Well, okay—I’ve used one while camping. Breakfast is ready! Today I’m gonna eat out on the porch. Yum! Okay then—itadakimasu! I was actually thinking of eating out on the wood deck or something, but it’s raining way too hard… not gonna happen. I’m heading to a different prefecture again today, and yep—it’s pouring again. No way this rain’s gonna stop anytime soon. I’m leaving in like less than an hour, so looks like it’s another rainy sightseeing day. *Lately I feel like I’m bringing rain to every prefecture I visit… Oh right—today’s my last day in Miyazaki. I seriously had such a great time here! The drives were so much fun, and the views were gorgeous too. I even saw monkeys chilling on the road! So many random fun moments— it’s definitely one of my new favorite prefectures. I wonder if it’s warm here in the winter too? I mean, they’ve got palm trees growing, so it’s gotta be pretty warm, right? Maybe I should escape here for the winter. *If it’s warm in winter, this is officially my second hometown. Thanks for the meal! Alright then—time to clean up and check out of this lovely place. Alright, all packed up and ready to go! So today I stayed at a 160-year-old traditional Japanese house here in Miyazaki Prefecture! It was such a fun experience! I had dinner around the irori hearth, and soaked in a Goemon bath, things you don’t get to do every day— definitely made some great memories. My Miyazaki trip’s coming to an end, but I totally fell in love with this prefecture, so I’ll be back for sure! Thanks so much for watching all the way to the end today!
