Sarasate: Romanza andaluza from Spanish Dances, Op. 22 No. 1 (Violin and Piano)|Eimi Wakui

Romanza andaluza is the first piece from Pablo de Sarasate (1844–1908)’s Spanish Dances, Op. 22, published in 1878. It was composed during his first concert tour of Scandinavia and dedicated to the Moravian violinist Wilma Neruda.

Rooted in the musical spirit of Andalusia in southern Spain—a region deeply influenced by flamenco, Moorish, and gypsy traditions—this piece captures a lyrical and soulful atmosphere unique to Sarasate’s heritage.
Set in C major, in 6/8 time, and structured in ternary form (ABA), the piece opens with a wistful, cantabile melody. Rather than focusing on virtuosic display, Sarasate draws on the expressive voice of the violin, shaped by gentle rubato, nuanced vibrato, and Romantic-era phrasing. The piano serves not merely as accompaniment but as a true musical partner—at times echoing the violin, at others weaving around it with graceful ornamentation.

The return of the opening theme near the end gives the piece a sense of nostalgic closure, like a memory gently resurfacing. It’s not the fiery flair of flamenco performance, but a more intimate, introspective passion—reminiscent of the Andalusian twilight.

Each time I perform this piece, I’m drawn again to its lyrical intimacy. It’s music that doesn’t speak loudly—it sighs, reminisces, and expresses as much through silence as through sound.
I hope this performance offers a glimpse into the poetic nuance and quiet emotional world that Sarasate so delicately captured in this evocative work.
