X病の解説|基礎科学シリーズ

Today in this video I’ll be talking about disease X. You will learn what disease X is, why this term was created by WH, what could possibly be disease X in near future, what is being done to prepare for it and why it is important for you to know about it. All that in this particular video. Please stay tuned till the end of this video to understand the concept of disease X. Have you ever heard of disease X? It is not a science fiction term. It is real warning issued by World Health Organization. A symbol for next potential global pandemic caused by some unknown pathogen. Just imagine that in future we are going to encounter any pandemic. How we can predict which kind of pathogen that will be. So we give the term disease X to those pathogens so that we can formulate research strategies to tackle that particular pathogen in future. Disease X is a placeholder name coined by the World Health Organization in 2018. It doesn’t refer to a known disease or pathogen, but rather to a hypothetical yet to be discovered infectious agent that could cause a serious international endemic or pandemic. In other words, disease X is the X factor that we don’t see coming. Research Goal. At Research Goal, you will find research-driven courses that offer real research skills, data analysis training, and publication support. And best of all, it is incredibly affordable, costing less than other platforms. Join Research Gold today for free. Check out the link in the description box. The concept of disease X was introduced under WH who R&D blueprint, a framework that prioritize research for potentially deadly pathogen. It acknowledges a simple but powerful truth, which is the next pandemic might come from a virus we don’t know yet. This foresight allows scientists, governments, and health systems to prepare in advance rather than scramble after a crisis hits. Disease X could be a new zunotic virus jumping from animals to humans, a mutated strain of an existing virus, a lab escape or engineered pathogen, or even a pathogen triggered by climate change. There are so many factors that are involved. These are just some of the factors that I’ve listed. The factors can be huge in number and they can contribute to the emergence of such pathogens that can cause these kind of serious illnesses. To prepare for disease X, the global health community is investing in platforms like vaccine technologies like mRNA vaccines, building real-time surveillance systems, enhancing a rapid response protocols, promoting international cooperation. Organizations like SAP, WHO and national governments are working to detect and stop disease X before it spreads. Remember disease X is not meant to scare it meant to prepare. If the world is caught unprepared again the consequences would be worse than COVID 19. By investing in science, strengthening health systems and supporting global collaborations, we stand a better chance of identifying and stopping the unknown threat. Thank you so much for watching the video. Stay tuned to Basic Science series for more. Keep learning and keep sharing.

1. What is Disease X?
• Disease X is a term coined by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2018.
• It represents an unknown pathogen that could cause a serious international epidemic in the future.
• Disease X is not a specific disease but a placeholder for the next “big one”—an infectious threat we haven’t yet discovered.
• It acknowledges the unpredictability of pandemics and the need to prepare for the unexpected.

2. Why Did WHO Create the Term?
• To highlight the need for proactive research and preparedness, even for unknown threats.
• After outbreaks like SARS, MERS, Ebola, and COVID-19, WHO recognized that future pandemics may come from totally novel pathogens.
• Disease X pushes countries and scientists to invest in broad-spectrum diagnostics, flexible vaccine platforms, and rapid response systems.

3. What Could Be Disease X?
• It could be a novel virus emerging from animals (a zoonotic virus).
• It may arise from virus mutation, synthetic biology, or even accidental lab release.
• Possibilities include:
o A highly contagious respiratory virus
o A mutated strain of an existing virus (e.g., influenza or coronavirus)
o An entirely new virus with high human-to-human transmission and fatality

4. Why Should You Care About Disease X?
• Because pandemics affect everyone—regardless of borders or background.
• Disease X could lead to global health crises, economic collapse, and social disruption if we’re unprepared.
• Understanding Disease X is about understanding our own vulnerability, and the power of science to defend against it.

5. What’s Being Done to Prepare for Disease X?
• WHO and partner organizations are strengthening pandemic surveillance and early warning systems.
• Research is focused on:
o Prototype vaccines (like mRNA platforms used in COVID-19)
o Broad-spectrum antivirals
o Global coordination under the One Health approach (human, animal, and environmental health)
• Initiatives like CEPI (Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations) are investing in “Disease X-ready” infrastructure.

6. Conclusion
• Disease X reminds us that the next global health threat may not yet be known—but it is real.
• Preparedness, awareness, and scientific collaboration are our best defense.
• Stay informed, support science, and advocate for strong public health systems.
