Tchaikovsky: Valse Sentimentale, Op. 51 No. 6 (Violin and Piano)|Eimi Wakui
Valse Sentimentale is the sixth piece from Tchaikovsky (1840 – 1893)’s Six Pieces, Op. 51, composed in 1882. Originally written for solo piano, it has since been arranged for various instruments, including the version for violin and piano heard here.
The minor-key melody carries an introspective, as the title suggests, wistful character. The piece opens quietly and delicately, gradually building in emotion before gently returning to a reflective and tranquil close — a structure that leaves a lasting impression.
Although written in 3/4 time as a waltz, this is far from the grandeur of a ballroom dance. Instead, it feels like an inward dance of memory and emotion. Tchaikovsky’s signature harmonic richness, paired with subtle modulations between minor and major, brings out the delicate nuances of mood and sentiment.
Each time I perform this piece, it feels as if the music is speaking softly to me. There’s no flash or display — only the challenge of expressing the beauty of silence, and the fragile tremble of feelings that defy words.
Through the singing voice of the violin and the intimate dialogue with the piano, I hope to share with you the poetic imagery and gently shifting emotional landscape held within this small yet profoundly expressive work.
