welcome back you are still watching GH Teley Health showing you live on Odafu TV aton TV and dos TV introducing a guest special guest be he is the vice president for federation of Ghana medical student association and he goes by the name Dr joseph Edu Dr now you’re moving on to our topic for today topic cle cell disease okay Facebook of Ghana Medical Student Association [Music] student medical student okay okay is what an autosomal recessive disorder okay of the blood cellotype HBAS okay hbc cell disease HBSS HBS HBC other types of HB HBS HBot cle cell disease okay okay building blocks building okay okay hb A HBA HBS HBS HV sorry HBS HB HBS cle cell disease genotype [Music] the building blocks of every every human okay is um cle cell disease common
yeah cell disease statistics recently every year disease very prevalent here especially the sub Sahara Africa Sahara Africa Ghana Nigeria region cell disease 000 of Sahara Africa by by 2050 they are projecting that there will be like 70 75% of people who will be born with cle cell disease
okay and what are some of the signs and symptoms okay some protective HBF okay the HVA1 HBF HBO symptoms of cle cell hands and feet syndromeis immune system for 120 days days there is increased breakdown of red blood cell um some of the early things I mean very straightforward okay okay so um one one interesting thing about to low HP steady age around 12malady answer for circumosis below transfusion swelling feet patient a lot of challenge it is a lifelong um condition right from the onset there are lots of challenges a lot of complications most of the literature now second thing to the extent that sometimes is unable to function at all is able to capture them And I say it helps with their degradation and everything but against infection of getting infection there are ways of getting infection okay pneumonia they are risk of osteomalitis infection there of a lot of infection second one transfusion mostly transfusion it comes with side effects along the line they get blood transfusion reaction along the line now another one pain crisis the reason why circle shape blood vessels some special places in our body so they mostly experience what we call the bone the pain crisis especially their joints so knee pain yeah those major joints they really experience pain there now another one too is the acute chest syndrome stroke um cell disease so um it’s not just just about the hands and foot syndrome and I said the ductilitis there are a lot of complication and it is very important then as a community too we should be interested in advocating for people with cle cell disease because it really affect them imagine cle cell disease at any point in time at any point in time infection pneumonia and it will affect the schooling and everything thank youelcome treatment so recently I think the guideline there in the hospital disease right from the hospital most of the hospitals Then they start with the management cell but you are not managing the child okay is there any medication for the patient i learned that folic acid folic acid
folic acid [Music] I think so disease is a disease that right now I think there are research ongoing for cure i think recently um or last year or last two years there was a gene therapy that was plated to um be able to cure cell disease now stem cell transplant cell disease but for now in Ghana we see what we do management cell disease acidic acid therapy that was accepted to help with the treatment of cle cell disease it prevent them from getting these complications that we we spoke about vaccinations so these are the routine some of the routine medications check it for only the kids or adult patients there is even um there is even um a program whereby um at certain points cell disease they give them additional vaccines to protect them to help normal immunization that will help them okay medical agencies patients um so um I know there are a lot of agencies that are promoting cell treatment and advocacy um but I can’t like groups so maybe I have to search for it and get to know but what I know is cell for review for therapy and all that yeah ghv we talk about diseases healthy living mental health prevent do you have health concerns but can’t always go to the hospital then don’t miss GH Teley Health every Saturday at 4:30 p.m live on Dorsey TV gh Teleert we talk about diseases healthy living mental health prevention and more gh every Saturday at 4:30 p.m f 0247186777 [Music] do you have health concerns but can’t always go to the hospital then don’t miss GH Tele Health every Saturday at 4:30 p.m live on Dorsey TV gh Teleert we talk about diseases healthy living mental health prevention and more gh Every Saturday at 4:30 p.m priity only 024718677 [Music] do you have health concerns but can’t always go to the hospital then don’t miss GH Tele Health every Saturday at 4:30 p.m live on Dorsy TV gh Teley Health Expert we talk about diseases healthy living mental health prevention and more gh every Saturday at 4:30 p.m priority only [Music] Do you have health concerns but can’t always go to the hospital then don’t miss GH Tele Health every Saturday at 4:30 p.m live on Dorsey TV ghert we talk about diseases healthy living mental health prevention and more gh every Saturday at 4:30 p.m griity only TV 024718677 [Music] food and Authity [Music] back to send [Music] [Music] [Music] Company Limited First light walk [Music] [Music] forchech [Music] [Music] prophet spiritual checkup [Music] color number element [Music] Everythingual check [Music] [Music] check [Music] do you have health concerns but can’t always go to the hospital then don’t miss ghle health every Saturday at 4:30 p.m live on TV ghert we talk about diseases healthy living mental health prevention and more gh Saturday at 4:30 p.m healthity TV media 024718677 [Music] do you have health concerns but can’t always go to the hospital natural doctor then don’t miss gh health every Saturday at 4:30 p.m [Music] prophet [Music] [Music] spiritual checkup samson So check [Music] Do you have health concerns but can’t always go to the hospital then don’t miss GH Tele Health every Saturday at 4:30 p.m live on Dorsy TV ghert we talk about diseases healthy living mental health prevention and more how long do they take this medication is it for life or short period
okay thank you very much second cell disease liong condition um but as I said they are still working on a cure until sayure in Ghana sayure pills or drugs to manage the condition They help to manage for a very long time folic acid so they on it for a very long time
okay um there there have been a lot of research as to why cell especially in Africa and subs around Africa one one thing HB A HB S HB SS HBR individual people without cellar they are able to withstand severe okay malaria 2 is common in Africa and it is common in subsaharan Africa So there has been a link that malaria is prevalent in subsan Africa and that might probably be the reason why cle cell disease 2 is prevalent because among more cle cell treatment they able to survive the severity of malaria they’ve been able to leave and continue to live so there are lots of people with cle cell streets um in subsaharan Africa there individual yeah how is it diagnosed diagnosis there’s a policy right after birthis okay but the common test okay okay and this how um your your your blood is hbs HV [Music] HVS HBS cell anemia other types of cle cell disease HBS HBS the particular type of cle cell disease How man treat the likelihood that cells Then when they are done then they will do the various investig Okay okay thank you yeah there’s a way to prevent it okay i think HB any HVA HVA HVS one is 25% chance So all boils down to the marriages and encourage young it starts from also knowing your genotype so everyone has to know their then you don’t attempt it at all so that’s one of the way to ensure that is being prevented the other advancement the advancement to help with intraetal treatment but that’s still still ongoing but the key thing is to make sure that before you get into marriage you know your your blood loop and you know that you are marrying someone compatible in terms of the genotype first class travel fund insurance dog final words general public patient
okay thank you very much um I think say before I’ll say my final words no um Thursday that was 19 um June was um world cle cell day so I’m I’m very glad that we’re able to have a show on cell to educate the public on it global action local impact that’s empowering communities for effective um self advocacy in what they were encouraging us is we should try and do more of community based education so that the individual or people with single cell can be able to have that effective advocacy and also So the community will come on board to support them so um that’s one thing see I’m just encouraging every individual to first of all get to understand cell is part like it’s common in South Africa so it’s good you have a fair knowledge of it so you know how to relate with a person i mean they they live a normal life and second people living with sec they are um they are warriors okay or they are fighters I mean a lot of people are doing well they are going for checkup they are routine checkup they are taking their medication sometimes not easy to be on medication every day but they are doing that Yes I think I forgot to mention that if the person has dehydration if the person under a lot of stress complication so they are able to they should know these triggers and avoid these triggers so that they will be able to avoid complication um so these are these are my final word that they should keep on um fighting they should keep on going for their routine um take ups they should keep on taking their medication h we know that one day because of the advancement of science the advancement of medicine as I said there are ongoing trials and as they are gene therapies that has proven to cure um cle cell disease now there have been stem cell transplant which has proven to cure um cle cell so we know that um there’s light at the end of the tunnel there will be a moment we really get like cure here in Ghana at a very affordable price gh do you have health concerns but can’t always go to the hospital then don’t miss GH Teley Health every Saturday at 4:30 p.m live on Dorsey TV gh Tele Health and health expert we’ve talked about diseases healthy living mental health prevention and more live GH every Saturday at 4:30 p.m only 024718677 [Music] due to some technical issue cle cell disease Is I mean is it transmitted to will you be able to get some okay from birth cell disease so that’s the way that you can get cells disease question
okay
okay cell patient HIV patient okay cell patient not really because it depends to infection condition managing the child for checkle most people they say they look young for their age because of multiple sickness but once clinic say there are people they are doing very well so they don’t really appear HIV management serious you have a lot of episode infection they look young and they don’t really grow well that some percentage of them are not able to go like how friends are going special food special food
yes so nutrition is very important but okay maybe I haven’t come across that yeah but there’s no like special food special food um yeah for them but as I said they have to eat very well they have to eat nutritious food because they are prone to infection so it will build up their immune system and help them try yeah so this this is what I know but I don’t know if they have like special food for for them yes
okay now infection so are they supposed to put on nose masks every day or to prevent the cold environment now they don’t also do with a lot of stress then one thing is if they are dehydrated but because they are prone to infection so it’s good they protect themsel because immune system might not be the same as someone without cell to take caution as a protective mechanism they should wear the crowd okay and getting closer to us
