アメリカのドナルド・トランプ大統領は21日夜、米軍がイラン国内の3カ所の核施設を空爆したと発表した。
空爆から数時間後の22日朝、米国防総省の記者会見でこの複雑な作戦の経緯が説明された。
アメリカのピート・ヘグセス国防長官は記者団に対し、「アメリカの爆撃機は、世界に知られることなく出撃し、任務を終えて帰還した」と述べた。
この「ミッドナイト・ハンマー作戦」は数カ月にわたって計画され、125機以上の飛行機、1隻の潜水艦、14発の地中貫通爆弾（バンカーバスター）が使用された。
ヘグセス長官は、今回の攻撃が「イランの核能力に対して強力かつ明確な破壊力を示した」と主張した。
ただし、攻撃の全容を把握するには時間を要するとみられている。特に、主要な核施設に対して使用された地下貫通爆弾がどの程度の深さまで到達したかを確認するには、さらなる映像資料の分析が必要だという。
BBCヴェリファイ（検証チーム）のマーリン・トーマス記者が、この作戦がどのように行われたかを説明するとともに、イランのイスファハン、ナタンズ、フォルドの各施設の被害を示した衛星画像を分析する。
