reporter Irene Cruz is live outside Dodger Stadium with fan anticipation hi Irene yeah Philip Colleen good morning yes there’s a lot of anticipation surrounding this news we’ve seen Shi Otani hit homer after homer and now fans will get to see a whole new side of Sho Show Otani wearing Dodger Blue he’s returning to pitching after nearly two years back on the mound pitching for the first time in Dodger Blue i’m excited i love Shi Otani tonight Shi Otani pitches in his first MLB game since August 2023 when he got injured he had elbow surgery that same year not that it stopped him from being a powerhouse hitter yeah he’s breaking all these records right so it’s kind of cool that he’s coming back to the mound yeah the three-time MVP was actually not supposed to rejoin the rotation until after the all-star break possibly not even until August but the process has ramped up in the past few days it’s fun to see someone who’s amazing at what they do do what they do i think it’s it’s pretty beautiful it couldn’t come at a more crucial time for the Dodgers as 14 pitchers are currently injured tina in Atwater Village told us her boyfriend’s really excited about Otani he was like “It’s a big day.” He’s pitching tonight i was like “We should go.” He’s like “I don’t have $9,000.” So I guess yeah it’s a big deal but maybe tickets are hard to get thankfully tickets aren’t as pricey as that at last check tickets were only between $145 to upwards of 2,000 tonight’s Dodger game is against their rivals the Padres’s first pitch is at 7:10 p.m it’s part of a four-game home series it’s tough to be a pitcher and a hitter i can’t wait till he takes the mound though yeah fans are really excited that Otani is returning a bit earlier than expected to the mound in the meantime manager Dave Roberts says that Otani is expected to get the ball to start tonight and he’s expected to pitch one to two innings reporting live at Dodger Stadium Irene Cruz ABC7 Eyewitness News all fans have been waiting for it’s showtime it’s all happening right behind me Dodger Stadium yes that’s right show Otani will pitch for the first time in nearly 2 years taking the mound against the Padres’s it’s happening at 710 so we’ve got a little bit of time but it is happening tonight manager Dave Roberts is just thrilled he uh is ready for his two-way start to get back to pitching that’s right once again it’s happening tonight at 7:10 p.m and you heard him just now fans are going to be absolutely wild this is the first time they’re going to see this aspect of Shoi Otati in a Dodgers uniform so I’m excited to see I’m excited to see the reaction honestly people are going to be so happy back to you that’s right let’s hope he does well of course on the mount i see you bringing in the Dodgers home series with the Padres’s and this is happening nearly 2 years after Otani had surgery for an injured elbow he hasn’t pitched in a game since then but was still busy breaking records with you know a bat now the two-way superstar is ready to dominate both sides again meanwhile the Dodgers are at the center of more than just baseball yeah kal’s Rick Montinees shows us how the team got caught in the middle of this immigration controversy you’ve likely seen Dodgers fans posting about this one in your social feeds they are not happy about what was told to this performer her name is Nza we’ll show you the video in just a second but I want to point out that she says someone with the team told her not to sing in Spanish but she did so anyway she says because she wanted to show solidarity with the people of Los Angeles especially with all of this anger and unrest over recent ICE raids [Music] [Music] i just could not believe when she walked in and told me no um but I just felt like I needed to do it as a team the Dodgers have not commented publicly on that rendition but you see this photo here posted by veteran Dodger Kik Hernandez he commented on the ongoing ICE activity which the team has not in his caption he says in part “I may not be born and raised but this city adopted me as one of their own.” He goes on to write “I cannot stand to see our community being violated profiled abused and ripped apart.” He ends his post with the hashtag city of immigrants we reached out to the Dodgers ourselves we’re still waiting to hear back but apparently an official with the team told the Los Angeles Times that there were no consequences for Neza the performer from Saturday and that she is welcomed back here at the stadium any time dodgers fans though they’re still waiting to hear if the team will say anything about the ongoing ice activity here in Los Angeles and we’re likely to see those posts continue unless we hear something from the team
