米ロサンゼルスで不法移民摘発をめぐる抗議デモが激化したことを受け、ドナルド・トランプ大統領は7日夜、一定の状況下で州兵を連邦政府の指揮下に置くことを大統領に認める連邦法に基づき、カリフォルニア州への州兵派遣を命令した。州兵は通常、州知事の要請に応じて出動する。
州兵は8日に現場に入ったものの、抗議デモ参加者らと警察・州兵などとの衝突が収まる気配はない。
カリフォルニア州のギャヴィン・ニューサム知事は、自分の要請なく州兵が派遣されたことに反発している。
トランプ政権関係者は、妨害する者はたとえベテラン政治家でも逮捕すると警告している。
こうした中、ニューサム知事は米MSNBCの取材で、「政権は一体何をしているんだ？ 大人になるべきだ」などと怒りをあらわにした。
そして、トム・ホーマン国境問題担当長官に対し、「私を追及して逮捕しろ。さっさと終わらせよう」と述べた。
一方でトランプ大統領は、ニューサム知事を「無能」と批判。「我が国の偉大な州の一つを破壊している」と述べた。
