” Variations on a Theme by Corelli in the Style of Tartini” is one of the so-called “pastiche” works composed by the Austrian violinist and composer Fritz Kreisler (1875–1962). At a time when audiences were fascinated by rediscovered music of the Baroque and Classical eras, Kreisler published several works under the names of historical composers, presenting them as newly unearthed manuscripts. This particular work was originally attributed to the 18th-century Italian virtuoso Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770), though Kreisler later revealed that it was entirely his own composition. While some criticized the deception, many listeners and musicians embraced these works for their undeniable musical value — good music, after all, is simply good music.
This charming piece, Kreisler begins with a noble and balanced theme reminiscent of Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713), then unfolds five imaginative variations in the style of Tartini. Each variation showcases a different facet of the violin’s expressive potential, ranging from lyrical ornamentation and double stops to dazzling virtuosity. The piece is both an homage to Baroque elegance and a showcase for Kreisler’s own romantic sensibility and technical brilliance.
I hope you enjoy the unique blend of historical style and personal artistry that makes this work such a delight to play — and to hear.
