This sonata, composed by 18th-century Italian composer and violinist Giuseppe Tartini (1692–1770), is one of his most famous works and is known as one of the most mysterious and technically demanding pieces in Baroque violin music.
The sonata is also associated with a famous anecdote. Tartini is said to have made a pact with the devil in a dream, during which the devil played the violin. The performance was so extraordinary that Tartini felt he could never replicate it in real life. Upon waking, he composed this piece based on the impression the dream left on him. This is why it became known as “The Devil’s Trill.”
Musically, the piece is rooted in the Baroque style, but it incorporates many innovative expressions for its time, with striking emotional depth and dramatic contrasts.
In particular, the final movement, where the legendary “trill” originates, is breathtaking, featuring a continuous and aggressive trill, interspersed with challenging passages that include double stops and leaps, leaving a powerful impression on the listener.
Furthermore, the interplay of lyrical, poetic melodies and intense emotions clearly reflects Tartini’s musical philosophy, offering more than just technical brilliance—there is a spiritual depth that resonates throughout the piece. This sonata is a challenging work not only in terms of technical proficiency but also in musical interpretation, and it continues to captivate and inspire performers and audiences alike.
