The ‘Prelude in G minor, Op. 23 No. 5,’ composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943), is a piece from the ’10 Preludes, Op. 23,’ completed in 1903. Despite being written two years earlier in 1901 than the other nine pieces, it is included in his set of ten preludes from Opus 23. This piece is not only filled with rich Russian ethnic sentiment but is also a masterpiece that symbolizes Rachmaninoff’s skill and brilliance, and it is still widely performed today.
The piece’s taut structure is in ternary form, consisting of an opening “A” section with punctuated sixteenth-note chords (marked: Alla marcia, march), a more lyrical and melancholy “B” section with sweeping arpeggios in the left hand (marked: Poco meno mosso), a transition into the original tempo, and a recapitulation of the initial march. Although it is just under five minutes long, it is a piece that is very challenging both technically and expressively.

この作品の緊張感のある構造は三部形式で、打音のある16分音符の和音（Alla Marcia、行進曲）で始まる「A」セクション、左手の流れるアルペジオを伴うより叙情的でメランコリックな「B」セクション（Poco meno mosso）、元のテンポへの移行する漸加速的な推移部、そして最初の行進曲の再現から成り立っています。5分弱の作品ですが、技術的にも表現的にも非常に難しい楽曲です。
