【Libertango】Piazzolla【Violin Performance】|Eimi Wakui

Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) composed “Libertango” in 1974, an innovative Argentine tango piece. The title “Libertango” is a combination of “libertad” (freedom) and “tango,” meaning “free tango,” reflecting Piazzolla’s intent to bring a new sense of freedom to the tango. This piece is a pioneering example of “Nuevo Tango” (New Tango), which blends traditional tango with elements of jazz and classical music, showcasing Piazzolla’s innovative approach.

The rhythm is in 4/4 time, with repetitive and tense phrases emphasized, maintaining an energetic atmosphere from beginning to end. The melody is passionate and powerful, often building rapidly toward a climax. Particularly through the interplay between instruments, the rhythm and melody evolve continuously, creating a sense of ongoing development.

Created during a time of social and political instability in 1970s Argentina, this piece symbolizes Piazzolla’s pursuit of freedom and expression, and is full of energy and emotional intensity. Piazzolla himself performed this piece on the bandoneón, and it has since been covered by many artists and used in films and theater, continuing to be widely loved. Today, enjoy this performance featuring violin and piano.
