Brahms, who was exposed to Hungarian music in Hamburg, composed the Hungarian Dances, a collection of 21 pieces, inspired by the performances of the Roma musicians. No. 1 is a work characterized by passionate and melancholy melodies. The sad and emotional melody in the middle range, the shining piano in the upper range, and the passionate and dynamic rhythms captivate the listener. Originally composed for piano four hands, his close friend Joseph Joachim arranged it for violin and piano, and it is widely performed along with Brahms’ own orchestral version and solo piano version.
