Rachmaninoff: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43 – Var. 18【Violin】|Eimi Wakui
The “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini” was composed by Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) based on the theme of No. 24 of Paganini’s “24 Caprces. Among the 24 variations, the 18th variation is particularly famous for its romantic melody and sweet harmony. Many composers have written variations based on this theme, but the 18th variation is unique in that it was composed based on a melody developed from a score in which the five notes at the beginning of the theme are arranged and mirrored, upside down.
This time, the performance was shot at the Omokage Observatory in Unazuki Onsen. The observatory was designed by Spanish architect Enric Miralles, who sculpted a majestic figure of a bird taking flight in the sky. The observatory juts out into the Kurobe River that flows below and is surrounded by waterfalls and panorama of nature. I had a great time playing in the fresh air!
