ファイアーボーイズ ~め組の大吾~ | FIRE BOYS – Megumi no Daigo Episode 10 [English subtitled]

A snake. "That… " – Hakase! Please stop the ladder! "happened in an instant. " – Go! "You’re a fireman, aren’t you?!" "At that moment," "everything became silent. " "Everything… " "vanished. " "Yes… " "I lost myself… " "everything. " Salute! Ueki-san… finally returning to the station is great. Yeah. Fireman funerals are so ceremonious. Seniors and juniors both, so many attended. Everyone respected him, right? But… promoting him after his death…? Ueki-san would never accept promotions. Pretty ironic, huh? Why? Why didn’t that guy come? Not attending the funeral is weird. Daigo-kun still needs to rest… – Regardless, he should’ve come! He was supposed to be there! And ever since, he’s rejected visitors, right? I think he doesn’t want to accept that Ueki-san has passed away. I was just like him, but not attending the funeral… that’s too weird! He saw Ueki-san die up-close! I can understand Daigo’s feelings. I understand that, too. For a while, don’t bother him. What he wants to do, he must decide alone. Hey now… Today, we have new replacement temps. You may come in. – Yes! Excuse me. – Excuse me. I’m from HQ. "Ezaki," I am. – Hello, "Sukin," I am. Nice to meet you! – Nice to meet you! Wait… I’m Captain Taira. Nice to meet you, too. Nice to meet you. – Hello. My office over here. – Yes. Captain! – Amakasu! This is part of our job. What we need to do now is not get emotional. Instead, we focus on doing our best work. What’s wrong? Well… chief can say that, but I still think what Daigo’s doing is wrong. I agree with chief. If he won’t accept it, just leave him alone for now. But, like this, Ueki-san also… – Emergency alert. Place: Midorimachi Lets go! Now we have to focus on the work. Your condition is looking better. No wonder you’re a fireman. You have such strong recovery powers. Helps you get back to work sooner, right? "Stop it! Stop it!" I’m very sorry. Well, he says he doesn’t want to see anyone. Is that right? Us, either. He won’t even talk to us. Um… his injuries? Much better. In 2 or 3 days, he can be discharged. Amakasu. Sorry. – Excuse me. Daigo! Why didn’t you attend the funeral? Quit this crap, are you a fireman?! Answer me now! – Amakasu! Don’t protect him. His injuries… are just an excuse to escape. Why? Why didn’t you acknowledge his death? Why not answer, how long are you going to brood?! Stop it! We are… firemen. We all knew when we chose this job… no matter what, we have to keep going! Rescue’s exam… I’m going to take it. Whether for Ueki-san’s sake, or my own sake, whether you go or not. Be strong. Amakasu! Go back. Huh? Jun-chan, go back. I’m sorry. – Good afternoon. All those reports, and meetings, too. Awful, isn’t it? Much to settle. For not being able to attend the funeral, I’m very sorry. Ueki-san would understand. He knew how demanding your job is. That little buddy, how is he? I don’t know. Let alone Rescue, being a fireman is now in question, huh? Yes. 10. 10… Be strong, you! I thought it was just you fighting with Daigo, but you’re really proceeding alone. It’s not about him. It’s my own problem. Mahiru-chan… you said because of him, I’d fight to be #1. Yeah. Just watch me. Though he’s not here, I’ll definitely do it. Watch my tryout. I absolutely won’t lose. No more? I’ll take this away. No food, no strength. Visiting hours are over, but I have connections. You’ll be released soon, right? That’s great. Here, this is for you. Behind the interim classrooms, a bakery with pineapple bread just opened. It’s fresh and great! All the girls love it; always has a long line. See, looks delicious. I’ll put it here, okay? Oh yeah, did you hear? The soccer team’s no-win record was broken. It was a 2:1 win. At half-time, that was the score. So excited, everyone stood up screaming. The next day, my throat hurt. Should’ve stayed. Huh? I should’ve stayed up there. Ueki-san could’ve finally been able rest. Taken his wife to dinner, bought her a rose. But… I’m the one who noticed the ash. Had I gone alone, it’d be better. Had I gone alone, he’d be safe. I didn’t see the flashover indicator. Ueki-san asked me to remember it. He asked me to remember a mental picture of it. But I was… Though you discovered it… nothing you did could’ve changed it. – I could’ve stayed up there! Despite his protests, I could’ve stayed there. If this is the result, I know I’d rather be dead! I… Ueki-san and Ueki’s wife… I feel so guilty, so… why would I choose this job? Well… don’t pressure yourself. It wasn’t Daigo-kun’s fault. You… definitely tried your best. That’s all… all you could’ve done. [Episode 10] Doctor, thank you so much. Yes, please take care. Thanks so much. – Come, get it. I have someplace to go alone. "Gutsy, huh? A mini fireman. " "Your own badge. " Daigo-kun. You got discharged. Wait! This, what’s it meaning? I’m not qualified to have it. What do you mean? Could it be you intend to resign as a fireman? This is how you intend to repay Ueki-san? Daigo-kun, "the lifetime fireman," this is how it ends? I hate myself. Instinct and luck… only ever relying on that stuff. How’s that a fireman? I’m out of energy. It’s my fault, I know that. Saved a few people, and then, "Lucky" got so full of himself. I really believed that I could save people by sheer enthusiasm. I’m tired. You truly think that? Mrs. Ueki-san is certainly thinking that. "He’d be alive if not for that idiot… " I won’t listen to you say these things. This isn’t Daigo-kun! This, I’ll hold onto it. I believe you’ll definitely come back. Welcome home! Hey, brother, where have you been? Today, we’re having sardine rice. Welcome back. – Welcome back. I’m sorry… I’m not hungry. Brother! – Miki! Let’s eat now, okay? Daigo did? This? Nevermind Rescue, he doesn’t even want to come back here. Doesn’t want to, then shouldn’t. Captain, I’ll eat after my jog. That will be all. – Yes! Yo! Business here today? – Just dropping off some mail. Hey… that guy, how is he? Daigo’s still like that. I guess it’s hopeless. With his personality, the trauma will be worse than most. We all grieved when Takahashi died in that gas explosion. Those wounds never heal; they follow us forever. To choose to keep accepting these wounds, he’s still too young. No. He will recover. Why do you think so? Just a feeling. YOU believe in instincts these days, huh? That guy will absolutely return. I’d bet my sexy car on it. I’m sorry… Bunta. Yo… Here. Seeing baked pachyrhizus, I just had to buy. Nice place, isn’t it? Medakagaoka. Ueki-san truly loved this city. When he was young, they’d always let him up into the high-tower. It was cold, he said, but watching the city lights come on was so enjoyable. Ah, "Today we’ll all be sitting around the table," I keep thinking. I often got invited to Ueki-san’s house for dinner. Such great cooking. Oh yeah, Ueki-san, everyday before leaving, would kiss his wife, did you know that? Huh? "I want to do that first," he said, "because I never know when I’ll die. " "It’s imperative. " He said, "If anything should happen," "I’ll be satisfied. " "So don’t blame anyone. Don’t grieve my death. " His wife told me… he was very happy. "Everyday Asahina-kun’s tutoring," she said, "invigorated him. " Returning home, he’d keep talking about you. Your instincts and luck seemed to delight him, right? But… but I… – That time… the one who drove the ladder down was me. I, as a fireman, think I made the right decision. Our actions were correct, I think. As I lowered the ladder, you needed to make the injured victim the priority. If you had stayed up there, and Ueki-san had come down, Ueki-san probably would’ve done the same thing. For firemen, this is how it is. Heck, there I go running off at the mouth again. The comments just now, I learned from Ueki. Eat. – This… is my famous vegetable juice. This here is orange sauce, and this is vinegar. It’s so effective! Yo! Um…? – Almost there. Morning, night, every free moment. Pretty determined, huh, that guy? You quit wanting that, right? Well… I certainly won’t interfere. After all, it’s nothing to be ashamed of. A fireman’s world is so brutal. You want to save people, so you become a fireman. But not everyone can be saved. Right now, know what you should do? What? – I… don’t know. I don’t know, but I would go do some muscle training. Barbell exercises, push-up exercises, sit-up exercises, train the muscles ‘til your body is exhausted. By doing that… suddenly… whatever you’re wanting to see will become visible. He’s doing that. He’s striving to find his own way. He’s challenging Rescue, no matter what, to know himself. What do you want to do? Do nothing and continue like this? Or try your best to find your answer? Well, the rest you’ll have to decide. It is your life, after all. Alright. It’s tomorrow? The Rescue exam? Yes. At work today, try to rest to conserve your energy. No, I want to train ‘til the end. Asahina-kun… I guess isn’t coming, huh? 13… 14… 15… Ouch…!!! Shit! Hurts… Yikes, what happened?! – It’s nothing. It’s nothing…? Your ankle is swollen. Heroic battle wound, is all. This will ruin your exam. It’s fine, fine. Uh… don’t tell anyone, okay? An injury as an excuse would be disgraceful. What’re you talking about? Exams happen every year, so this is pointless. – I want to join them this year. I… will definitely do it. Give me that. This needs to be wrapped tight. If you’re going, you must win. For Ueki-san’s sake. For Daigo’s sake. – Daigo? This… Mahiru just dropped it off for you. I invited her inside, but she declined. I swear, coming in shifts, huh? [Exam Registration Number] Kanda-kun. Your promising rookie has come? Unfortunately no. Little buddy. Those are yours. You always get so cocky, I helped by keeping them for you. Since you’re resigning, I had to return them, right? Ah, the horse races start soon. Uh…? [From: Teacher Kaiku] Kaiku. [Yama Factory] These… "Shinjuku. " (Area in Tokyo) "Asahina… how are you?" "I am fine. " "I’m still blowing a whistle. " "Looking after hopeless students like you. " "Whenever, however, they act just like you did. " "Don’t know anything, but still so rowdy. " "Well, recently my attitude toward them has changed, it’s true. " "At that time, you were a genuine fireman. " "Into that horrible scene," "soot coating your face," "you appeared before me. I’ll never forget it. " "After this, I" "will continue to look after hopeless students like you. " "I’m able to, only because of you. " "Asahina… thank you. " "Asahina Daigo-sama," "I hope you’re doing well?" "Even now when I think back" "to the time that iron girder pinned me," "Honestly I… " "I thought it was over, and had lost my will to fight. " "But… by you risking your own life, I was saved. " "Yes, my life belongs to you now, so I won’t waste it!" "Thank you… boy. " "Since then… " "I now live with my son and his wife. " "This extra time, I will seriously treasure it. " "Thank you so much. " "Daigo," "after I get out of jail, I’m going to start over. " "Once again, I’ll find a dream. " "I truly appreciate what you did. " "Thank you. " "Be strong, brother! Yay for Kyuta! " Kota. "Be strong… " "be strong. " "Daigo… " "accept Rescue. " "You have… God on your shoulder. " "What you want… wouldn’t ‘save people’ be more accurate?" "Go! You’re a fireman, aren’t you?!" "Be strong… little buddy. " Guessed you’d be here. Akaboshi-san! Good morning! Hakase! – Takaima-kun! Finally happening, huh? – Yeah. What the, everyone’s come! Too much free time on your hands. A Megumi member making it to Rescue will be a first, right? A memory like this, we can’t miss a second. Daigo? That so? – Fall in! We’ll now start… the 34th… So slow. #27, Asahina Daigo. Sorry I’m late. – Late?! This isn’t a game. No points for just showing up. I didn’t come here to lose. Show me your power under pressure. Yes! He’s out? He’s out where? You know how he is. 15… 16… 17… 49… 50… 51… 52… 53… – #25, out! 43… 44… 45… 46… 47… Now the final segment of the exam, the 1,500 meter short-run! Minimum time is 5 min. 10 sec.! Ready?! – Yes! You’re unpredictable. – You, too. To you, I definitely won’t lose. I definitely won’t lose, either. Standby! Ready… "So I… started running again. "

Now he’s all grown-up and has recently received his credentials as a firefighter. However, the firefighting brigade he is assigned to is the so-called “Me-Gumi,” the nickname of the Medakagaoka Fire Brigade, which at first glance seems to have absolutely no fighting spirit whatsoever. In reality, this is the home of a group of seasoned professionals led by that legendary firefighter Commander Gomi. They’re active on the front lines, constantly putting their lives at risk.
