Pachelbel: Canon in D Major – Violin|Eimi Wakui

The “Canon and Gigue for 3 violins and basso continuo” is a chamber piece by Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706), a German composer from the Baroque period. The canon in the first half of the piece is particularly famous, and is popularly known as “Pachelbel’s Canon,” making it a representative work that has left his name for posterity. Unfortunately, the date and circumstances of its composition are unknown, but according to one theory, it was written on the occasion of the wedding of Johann Sebastian Bach’s brother. The earliest extant score is a written transcription from the 19th century, and no autograph of his remains.

The work is in D major, 4/4 time, and is a three-voice equal tempered canon, but it differs from a standard canon in that it is not composed of only three voices but is accompanied by a basso continuo. The composition consists of three violins and a harpsichord, and this time the bass continuo is played by a cello.

This video was shot in front of a wisteria trellis in the precincts of Inami-betsuin Zuisen-ji temple, Toyama Prefecture. The temple is one of the largest wooden structures in Japan. It was a special experience for me to perform at a traditional temple with Inami carvings, which are recognized as a Japanese Heritage.
