Eimi Wakui|Brahms: Hungarian Dance No.1 for Violin and Piano
The Hungarian Dances No.1 by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) is a work from a collection of 21 dances that he arranged. It was one of the pieces inspired by Hungarian Roma music, which Brahms was performing as accompanist to violinist Eduard Remenyi (1830-1898) during his tours around Germany. The dances were originally composed the version for piano four hands but were later performed in a variety of orchestral and solo piano versions. The violin version was arranged for violin and piano by Brahms’ close friend Joseph Joachim (1831-1907).
No.1 is written in G minor and is characterized by a passionate, rhythmic melody. There is a historical recording of the first part of the piece with Brahms himself playing the piano, and it is considered an important document in music history as the first ever recording of the piece.
There are so many wonderful pieces in the Hungarian Dances that it was difficult to make a choice. This time I hope you enjoy No.1.
If you have a favorite Hungarian dance of yours, please let me know the number in the comments!
