The ‘Golden Webinars in Astrophysics’ series seeks to bring forefront research in astronomy, astrophysics, and cosmology to the public in the English and Spanish language. Our speaker of the Golden Webinar on October 9th, 2020 was Makoto Yoshikawa.
[07:01] – beginning of the presentation
[50:30] – beginning of the Q&A
Dr. Yoshikawa is the mission manager of Hayabusa2, an asteroid sample-return mission operated by the Japanese space agency, JAXA. Hayabusa2 was launched on 3rd of December 2014 and rendezvoused with near-Earth asteroid 162173 Ryugu on 27 June 2018. It surveyed the asteroid for a year and a half and took samples, and left in November 2019. It is expected to return to Earth on December 6th of 2020. Dr. Yoshikawa’s research focuses on celestial mechanics, and in particular on orbital analysis of small Solar System bodies such as asteroids and comets. At the ISAS, he is part of the orbital determination group, and works on the orbital calculations for all Moon and planetary explorers launched by ISAS and a few Earth orbiting satellites. He is also involved in planetary defense, which deals with the issues of avoiding Earth impacts by potentially hazardous celestial bodies.
