Some thoughts:
After endless procrastination, I finally finished a project that I had wanted to complete since last year! 86 was definitely one of the animes that I have enjoyed the most in the last couple of seasons. Though its world building certainly had some major flaws (e.g. Lena outright shaming the empire in military class…), its themes and portrayal of characters was intriguing.
Something I want to mention: Shin didn’t exactly say “Will you remember me?”, his original words “忘れないでいてくれませんか?” directly translates to “Will you (please) not forget (about me/us)?” in which Lena replies “I will not forget”. There is so many parenthesis because Japanese like to omit a lot of subject/objects, which also makes their language particularly ambiguous and indirect and PRETTY in these kind of sentimental moments (in my humble opinion). I just liked to mention this point because I feel like there is a subtle nuance and difference between the two translations, though I did keep it as “Will you remember me” in the video for the sake of clarity/understanding and timing.
